1. I've read a lot of articles about the band people think will be the next to inherit the the crown from U2, most seem to suggest Coldplay. I couldn't disagree more with that opinion (and let's face it we've all got an opinion).

U2 began as a hard-edged punkish band at the start of the New Wave movement in the 80's. Bono recognises that the night U2 went on stage after the final performance by The Police on the Conspiracy of Hope Tour was the night U2 took the mantle (according to the U2 by U2).

    So going by that form my personal tips for greatness would be;

    Muse (just simply awesome live)
The Killers (kick ass first album slighlty dodgey second album... ring any bells?)
Green Day (great live, possibly a bit too slick and pretty)
Stars of CCTV (great cinematic open sound, a lot like early U2 had)

Anyway, I apologise if this sort of thread has already been done to death, but I'm new and frankly just wanted an excuse to say hi... so hi.

    HaJ
  2. Welcome! You can say hi here!
  3. Okay. Definitely not Coldplay or Greenday. I like coldplay, but I don't think they will ever earn as big a name as people say, one because every one of their songs sounds the same to me, and two, because of the music business and fan base these days. Everyone is into rap, and peoples attention span is so short, they move onto the next artist after liking the first one for a month. So, truthfully i don' t think their will be any bands from these days that become like super huge like bands before the 90's did.

Green day sucks. 90's green day was cool, they were punk, they made good music, their new stuff is emo and crap.

Killers rock, they are my 2nd favourite band next to U2. That being said, I still don't think anyone can become a super huge band these days.
  4. I don't think that any of the above bands can make it and I agree with RattleandHum1988 that it looks like there won't be a band in sight that can make it as big as U2 these days or in the future.

Many ppl claim that the Killers have the potential...I hope they'll show it on the coming albums.

Coldplay make class music, you can't deny that imo. Yet the footstep of U2 is simply too big. But who knows what way they'll develop into with the new album and further songs with Brian Eno ? They'd get my vote in your question.

Muse are tooooooooooooooo alternative-crazy to make it into mainstream-success world wide if you know what I mean.

Never heard of that CCTV-band, so no chance to become the next U2 .

And Green Day is too long around already to be able to fit that footstep at any time in the future yet, imo...and their music is also totally different to the U2 of today. But they have gorgeous lyrics I must say.

Agree with your last words there. It's way too difficult to become a big band nowadays. Coldplay have some similarities with U2, but U2's sound is very unique. Looking back at all these years, you must admit that they've walked many various paths in music.
  6. Coldplay could do it. But I think they need to drop all the piano stuff, and Chris singing in the same way all the time. In fact, that is the one thing that annoys me with Coldplay. They have soo much potential, but they quite often like to play it safe. I'm not saying that their recent works is, but I do think Chris should experiment with his voice a bit more.
  7. There will never be another U2.
  8. I think Muse are very good and they have potentional to be even better...but yeah, there is only one U2

I agree with the piano thing, they need to stop using it as much as they do. They are becoming more rockish, with X&Y (album) and Violet Hill. And, I also agree with them playing it safe. Look what happened with "Pop". Unfortuneatly, (unless Coldplay mixes it up a bit) no one will fill U2's shoes. Right now, I think that its safe to say, that when U2 ends, all of music ends.

Muse or Killers, although I don't think Killers will ever get as big as U2, nor Muse (although they're not exactly doing badly!). Coldplay come to mind, but I just don't think they've "got it"...

And besides, U2 are one of a kind...

  12. I always shout it when this comes up...

    Angels & Airwaves.

Granted no one will be the next U2

Don't believe Q (or hey lets make a Brit Band like really really big like, and ittow be owwsome) Magazine on Coldplay. They are boring as sin, something U2 has never been.
There is one band coming up who may just do very well though.

As far as AvA goes, We Don't Need To Whisper. Check it out.
