1. was Red hill ever considered to be released as Single other than WOWY prior to the Joshua tree coming out back then???? all thru the yrs of course heard mentioned that the reason the band didn't perform it was because of the intensity just one of those things if they performed every once in a while back on the JT tour would have been dynamic on bootleg recording .............. read it was done as a "soundcheck back in tennesse" during the tour too bad that never surfaced

no problem for them doing Spring hill mining disaster that is
  2. I dont understand your whole post.

I heard that the tones Bono have to reach where too high to reach it every show so... you should play a single every show.

Actually, I got the WHOLE story from Steve Averill of Four5One when he was at the R&R Hall of Fame in June of 2003.

    A) Red Hill... was to be the second single, not the first.
    B) The artwork was to be the picture of Bono that was later used for "In Gods Country" ("One Tree Hill" in New Zealand/Australia)
    C) Steve Lillywhite's then wife, Kirsty MacColl, not only suggested the tracklist for the album but was on that lobbied BIG TIME for "I Still Haven't Found..." to be a single.
    D) Bono realizing that it would be very tough to sing the song high key from night to night, was the ultimate reason that "Red Hill..." was dropped for "I Still Haven't Found"...

I'd consider Steve Averill, the man that gave U2 the suggestion of the name U2 and long time friend and artwork designer to be a pretty reliable source.

So DIEDER is on the right track. The band felt that if it were to be a single, it should be something that they could promote and play at most if not all shows. When it came to Red Hill... they felt that they could not.

Ofcourse, that didn't stop them from later releasing "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" in the Fall of 1992 and then proceed to DROP it from the setlist !!!!! Guess they felt they promoted it enough on the US Zoo TV Indoor and ZOOTV Europe (Summer of `92) shows? Silly Irish!
  4. I remember Bono had said that it wrecked his voice...and he's right, have you tried singing along with it with as much power as Bono puts into it...it really hurts!

I just went to a little lightly wooded park across the street from my house and tried the "I'm hanging on" part... my voice is pretty scratchy now... shit! It hurts a little...

btw, its 9:30 pm (in this part of the world) right now... my poor neighbors ... i'm surprised no cops have shown up yet! Imagine hearing that when your ready to go to bed!

    Yeah.

I have to do that part in falsetto because it's so high. Otherwise, I sound like a hoarse Kentuckian. Naturally my voice is quite raspy, so singing that night after night... yikes! I don't even want to think about it!
