He sings like he is being castrated all the time.
  2. Well, we havent had any new news in the past week or so, so lets recap:

We'll start with a joke, a a question I asked way before we knew U2 were gonna make a psychedlic pop album

    What started this buzz:

As for what the new songs will offer, Lanois says that some hints may be gleaned from the music they've been listening to of late. "We've been referencing Jimi Hendrix records recently," Lanois says. "I was interested in the drum feels and that track 'Crosstown Traffic' has an incredible drum performance. When [we were] working a couple of weeks back, we wanted to hear some of that Mitch Mitchell drumming."

No Line on the Horizon story:

"Can I interrupt this broadcast?" he says. "There's an amazing moment in Ireland, where we live, when the sea and the sky can have the same color and the line of the horizon disappears. And I look at these mountains, and it's just about to happen here."

He reaches beneath the seat and pulls out a CD case, withdrawing a hand-labeled disc. "I have just the right song for it … if I can find it."

He slips the CD into the player and heavy distortion fills the car. It's a song called No Line on the Horizon, which the band is developing for their next album. "It came out of a new distortion box that my guitar tech got," The Edge says.

"This is a little full on!" Bono shouts. "But it's worth it, just to get a flavor of this. It's only a demo."

The song is rough, weaving between brutal guitar blasts underscoring the mellow title refrain. "These are just first drafts," Bono explains.

Since the recordings are still in the embryonic phase, it's not clear what direction the band will be headed with their next collection of songs..."

    About U2 lyrically:

The only sequels U2 have made were R&H and Zooropa, both on the road albums, far from this next one. But if that's the quality of their sequels, I wouldn't mind another one, would you?

U2's whole career lyrically seems to arc with life itself. We got the wide-eyed baby 'Boy', the burning coming of age in 'War', adolescent and understanding teens in 'Unforgettable Fire', building, searching and making of oneself in 'Joshua Tree' and the flourescent turbulence, tumble and up-down, static-in-the-airwaves freefall through your adult life with 'Zootopia + Pop' (my current phase thankyaveramuch)
The mid-life understanding, mortality and appreciation that would come with age (I imagine)is where 'ATYCLB' found its voice and 'HTDAAB' was a broad look, not only to the world and what it is but a look back at yourself and what you are and where you came from (giving the album a sense of duality which was nice).

No, Bono has never backtracked lyrically and I wouldn't imagine he would with the next (SUPERNOVA!!!) album. The clues are in where he is with his life and I imagine its the sense of his newfound appreciation with music and what it can do to you and what you can see through it . Africa is no doubt playing on his mind and will surface in one form or another in the next album for sure and despite how everyone else feels about that, for that I couldn't be happier.

Because does anyone else remember the effect Africa's beautifully rich light and shadow of poverty cast on Bono? Something about desert plains and dust clouds dissappearing...?

    The sessions move to France:

Dublin’s Windmill Lane Studios, the band are set to do some warm

“I’m heading out to France to begin working with them on it,” Joe
tells hotpress.com. “They decided they needed a few rays while they
were working on the new songs. But things are in full swing working
    towards a new album.
We’re hoping to have something in the can come September/October.
We’ll know in the next couple of months how things shape up but that’s what they’re aiming for.
All things being equal they will more than likely tour in 2009. They love it. It’s their life
    and it’s what they do.”

And this little bit right here:

....about 45 minutes after my arrival at Hanover Quay, Bono opens the door and waves to me, I get to the door and start chatting with him.
I congrat him for his birthday, talk about what I'm doing in Dublin, how long I have been here and that in a few weeks I go back definetely to Spain, etc... (he keeps remembering me as the Spanish bullfighter, hahahaaa) eventually he asks me if I have ever visited the studio interior....I want to die..., of course I said no and he invites me to come in....10 glorious minutes inside, he shows me the room they use to rehearsal and then he takes me to the recording and mixing room where Steve Lillywhite is and seconds later Lanois makes his appearance. Steve asks Bono if he wants to listen to anything, he nods, I can't believe it.

Bono tells me that what is going to sound is PSYCHEDELIC POP.... the song starts....I have to say it's something new, different from HTDAAB, it has a very hard rock sound and a very strong bass line, just at the end Morrocan influences can be felt.... the song is quite long, but awesome (I didn't ask the title).

Steve is crazy with a strange dance during the song , Bono, by his side, is also enjoying, dancing timidly and listening very carefully (both Steve and Bono kept looking at me and my reaction, but I was icefrozen, in coma, dreaming, trying to realise where I was and who I was with...)
While in the middle of the song Adam appears with a coffee in his hand, he says hello and stands by me.
When the song ends Bono asks me how I like it, everybody looking at me, I say: "strong! fresh! amazing! I have no words!", they all laugh..."

    Moment of Surrender:

At HQ tonight, Brian Eno has confirmed the title of one of U2's new songs to U2valencia.com.

Its title is Moment of Surrender.

Eno has commented that "it is the best song I've ever done with U2" and at the same time that "it is a slow song with a big atmosphere".

    More information to follow shortly."

If this is true, I wonder if this is a re-worked "Mercy," based on the title?
    (Maybe not).

    FORMATS: unknown
    TRACKLIST: unknown

    POSSIBLE SONGS MENTIONED:
These are songs that have been mentioned in the buildup to U2's next studio album:

"No Line On The Horizon" - Bono and Edge played this song for a USA Today writer during an in-the-car interview at the Sundance Film Festival. On hearing it, writer Anthony Breznican says "heavy distortion fills the car," and later adds: "The song is rough, weaving between brutal guitar blasts underscoring the mellow title refrain." Edge explains that the song "It came out of a new distortion box that my guitar tech got."

Unknown Title - in the same interview with Anthony Breznican, Bono and Edge played a second song whose opening lyric is, "It's six o'clock...". Bono tells Breznican that numbers are significant in each of the new songs.

"If I Could Live My Life Again" - Bono says this song is "inspired by the great Argentinian poet Jorge Luis Borges." Bono said he had just begun the song while speaking with author Michka Assayas in December, 2005. Their interview appears as the extra material in the paperback version of Bono in Conversation with Michka Assayas.

"Love Is All We Have Left" - a song Bono named during his May, 2006, trip to Africa as one that he had recently written. "It’s like an old Broadway tune. I thought it was a Frank Sinatra song," Bono said.

"North Star," a song from the How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb sessions which included a guest organ appearance from Michael W. Smith. In this CCM article, Smith describes the song as a tribute to Johnny Cash.

"Mercy", one of the last songs to get cut from How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, described in Blender magazine as "a six-and-a-half-minute outpouring of U2 at its most uninhibitedly U2-ish"

"Lead Me In The Way I Should Go" -- a contender for Atomic Bomb first mentioned in this February, 2003, interview with Bono in Grammy Magazine

"You Can't Give Away Your Heart" - a contender for Atomic Bomb first mentioned in SPIN magazine

    My take on the album:

    Psychedlic Pop....
This reminds me of the Beatles' Revolver. Note how that is one of their best selling albums.

    No Line On the Horizon....
So far the most powerful lyric I've deciphered from this is "I'll teach the world love". My only concern is "Is this another Beautiful Day/Miracle Drug?"

    Moment of Surrender....
The title is definitely interesting. No idea on what it may sound like (none of us here do anyway), but it could be peace, love, and war related.

    Mercy.....
It must have been reworked by now. Bono's vocals and some of the lyrics were crap, absolute shit. Then we got to hear Bono tear up "I am the Walrus" and "LSD" (Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds), so there's no worry about his voice. Even everyone else with the band thinks so.

    2006 Beach Clips....
Could we see "I Believe", "Thank You", and "All My Life"? Maybe or maybe not, but they still look exciting. However that was in Eze two years ago. Perhaps these have been dropped or entirely reworked, especially by now.

Smile and Window In the Skies, not....
And we will not see "Smile" or "Window In the Skies" on the new album. This stuff has already been released, and is nowhere near the "innovative" sound we've heard in previous clips (such as No Line On the Horizon and the new Edge clips).

    October.....
The band and co. want the album out by late October, no later than that. Recently we've heard there's only days left on recording the vocals. So now all they have to do after that is mix down the album, and we will wait as they do. We could get a single from it as early as late September. Let's hope there's an EP with this album, so we don't go crazy around here wondering what this album really sounds like.

And lastly, my final words in this huge comp:

  3. Nice compilation Steve. The songs No Line On The Horizon and Moment of Surrender are looking very promising to me.
  4. I have a feeling Moment of Surrender will have a much more spiritual focus, rather than a love and peace or war kind of vibe. but i could be wrong! or right!
  5. actual new fucking news!!!!! from @U2

In an interview with the Montreal-based magazine Voir, Daniel Lanois gets all loose-lipped about a new song on U2's upcoming album. The original article is in French, and the U2 stuff is in the last two paragraphs. Loosely translated, Lanois essentially says there's a new U2 track called "The Cedars of Lebanon" and that it draws inspiration from Jimi Hendrix. Lanois might also be saying that it's the first song on the album, or that it'll be the first single. (Anyone better at French than me want to confirm?)

If you're curious, you could do some research online, and learn about the importance of the cedars of Lebanon going back to Biblical times and beyond. :-)

Thx to GN, SW, and others for the tip.
