    U2 and the Bands Who Pretend To Be Them


    Here's our favorite '80s U2 moment and our list of their Top 5 best songs. Yours?

    Are you sitting down? It's been 28 years since U2's debut release. 28 freaking YEARS! That's older than the median age of most dudes on the rock charts these days. You were probably in high school when you first heard U2. You're hopefully not in high school now. 28 years. I just have to say it out loud again.


    Today U2's first three albums, Boy (1980), October (1981), and War (1983) have been re-released to remind us of their humble Dublin beginnings. And while some would say they've worn out their welcome, I say that any band who stays together, works hard, and plays every show like it's their last is all right with me. They've made the world safe for anthemic rock. Any modern rock band who plays two chords before jumping a dramatic octave owes something to U2.

    Here are three bands who wouldn't exist without U2. I'm sure you'll have your opinions. Go ahead and have at it. I can take it.



    THE KILLERS
    Listen to "Mr. Brightside." Ignore the matching '80s suits and listen to that guitar sound and the bass pumping out root notes. Sound familiar?


    RADIOHEAD
    Before they beautifully detoured into art rock esoterica, Radiohead was vying for the anthem rock throne. Their aching "High And Dry" was offered up as their version of "With Or Without You."

    COLDPLAY
    They stole U2's producer. They stole U2's iPod commerical. They stole U2's super-sincerity. They are U2 with a piano.

  3. Wow I was looking at the comments to this little blog or whatever it is and they literally got me in a bad mood. I don't want to act like U2 is gods gift to music, but they're a lot better than Radiohead. All of those people are probably those people who don't like mainstream music, BECAUSE it's mainstream music. I hate people like that "I like ____ because no one else likes them" they piss me off. I bet all of those people are either those kinds of people, or radiohead fans. U2 has had a lot of influence on so many new bands, I don't know if they've had any on Radiohead, but I do know they're a hell of a lot better than Radiohead all together. God damn, piss me off hahaha.

    The Killers sound more like Duran Duran and 1980's era Bowie than U2. Sure there are some U2-ism's but a direct comparison? I don't think so.

    Radiohead are fantastic and they are hardly U2 wanna-be's. The UK press tried to make The Bends out to be Radiohead's The Joshua Tree. Whatever. Radiohead follow their own path. if anything, they've more in common with Can than U2.

    I know many here hate Coldplay. I like them for what they are. They are a melodic pop group. I can appreciate that.

    Same here.Loved (still do) Parachutes & A Rush Of Blood..... but now I avoid 'em.I haven't got a problem if they admit the U2 influence,but copying is another thing.Don't forget,they played Red Rocks on the same date too,5th June,but 20 years later.And I think it rained before the show too......

    There always is...Miss Sarajevo, New Year's Day etc. All need a piano. Coldplay is just a melodic pop group with U2 as an example. And why not? Imagine you're starting to build a car, as inspiration, you'd probably pick a Ferrari or whatever car you like most.

    Yes I agree with you friend. The fact is that U2 are themselves a source for a lot of other sub-kind of musics. It's natural that a group that is near them in kind of music get influenced by them. Some say "the notes are always 7", but most of all in a kind of musical culture there are not so many ways of playing them 7. The argument should be who emulate better U2...

    About Coldplay I have to express my positive opinion. I consider myself a fan of them, though I agree with the usual argument that after A Rush Of Blood To The Head they got down, they got too much Coldplay-like. With X&Y they made no innovations and they looked too much like the imitation of themselves.
    But this new album... I feel it awesome! It's something special, really well done. A great sound, undoubtedly one of the best albums of the last years, according to me
    Nobody has doubts that next U2 album will make forget Coldplay's one, but it's very good
