I was AT this dress rehearsal. Thanks for much for posting this. I am not sure HOW anyone got a recording device in. They searched high and low and would not even allow cell phones in the arena.
DLing it now. Looking forward to hearing it. Good times.
Here is the back story to this legendary tape.......
We had known for about 2 weeks before opening night that the band would be rehearsing at
the LA sports arena. I had snuck into the Sports arena about 10 days before opening night to check
it out, it was easy since they held a flea market there and opened it up so people could use the restrooms
of the actual sports arena. I had considered hiding in the press box with a bag full of fruit
and my camera to try and film their rehearsals but decided it was not worth it since i would have to stay there for
days and would certainly lose my job. U2 held a radio contest on KROQ to allow a select few
fans to win tickets into the final rehearsal for Vertigo tour. No one I knew won, and i did not either, but
chrisedge and I decided to go check it out the day of the show. Chris thought if enough people showed up we might
get in or at least meet the band. At some point that day I learned that the contest winners were meeting at the Palladium
in Hollywood about 30 minutes from the Sports arena, I decided to go up there in hopes that a contest winner
would show up without their '+1' and take me. I was not convinces(as Chris was) that the band would just allow
fans who showed up in. I got to the Palladium and made a sign that siad something like 'Huge fan please take me if you
dont have someone', it took a lil while but someone came without a +1 and agreed to take me!
Security for this was ridiculous, we were REPEATEDLY told at the Palladium that no cameras, camcorders, cell phones or
recording devices would not be allowed. We got on shuttle busses and were driven to the Sports Arena. We waited
like an hour to get off the busses. On the bus I had to stuff the camcorder into my pants. I had decided just to
bring my camera, 2 tapes and 1 90 minute battery. The guy who brought me was shocked when he realized what i was
planning but thought it was cool as long as i promised not to take him with me if i got caught.
once we started entering Security didnt get better, we were patted down and wanded with metal detectors, they checked
all bags and it was pretty much the best security I have ever seen. Most of you know i have filmed U2 a bunch of
times but may not know that I have filmed over 200 shows all together and this was the most serious security I had
ever encountered. But of course I got in, haha i am ME! once in they were only letting people in a few sections
on each side of the arena lower level and i didnt see a simple way to slip away and find a hidden spot to film from.
this was a problem, but i got lucky and got a front row seat when they opened up seating in a new section.
I saved spots for my friends Chris and Joe as well as the girls from Exit. and then we waited and chris, joe and I
discussed how in the hell I was going to pull off this video. AND WE HAD NO IDEAS! this was ridiculous, security
all over the place, they were swarming and it didnt seem possible. I made the decision I would not try and film
the whole thing since I didnt have enough battery for that anyways. So the show started and I got an idea.... There
was a railing in front of me and i could set my camera there and conceal it with my sweater, i would only be able to
point my camera at the stage but at least i would get something. So I waited a few songs and decided to go for it
and then set the camera up, everything was going smoothly until i had to be an idiot, i wanted my friend Brad(Octagon)
to hear some of the show so i decided to call him on my cell phone, evidently they spotted me and a few minutes
later some guy with a walkie talkie comes down next to me and ask me where my phone is. I told him I didnt know what
he was talking about and couldnt hear him and then just started ignorring him. He went away and I just about shit my
pants, it was at that point I took the Camera off the ledge. I figured they would be back to kick me out, but that
never happened. I took the tape out of the camera and hid it in my sock. And to this day I dont know why but I put the
blank tape I had into the camera. The show continued and nothing happened. We were walking out then.....
After the show....
I was walking out of the venue with Joe, I had asked him to carry my sweater with the camera so I could go to the
bathroom, when I came out of the bathroom I was approached by some security guards, the yellow jacket dudes, they
told me they were aware that I had filmed the show and wanted the tapes. I told them I didnt know what they were talking
about, they had both me and Joe stopped and didnt seem to know which of us was the taper. So Joe finally said yeah
I have a camera I snuck in but we didnt tape anything, he showed them the camera and they asked for the tape. Well
he didnt exactly know how to open the camera so i had to do it, this made them suspicious. they searched it for a
memory card and once they got the tape we thought we were good to go, then they asked 'are there any other tapes'
and we looked at them and said NO, and I asked can we go now, and they said no, we went back and forth and finally
2 police officers and someone i presume was U2 security showed up, the security was INSISTING on searching Joe and
myself for tapes and I was refusing. I explained to the officers that I would not consent to be searched, that I had
not violated any law and that if they wanted to eject me for trespassing that was fine, I was not insisting on staying.
I asked the officer if they had a right to detain me and he dodge the question, simply saying I needed to stay.
Finally I got sick of it, It was clear I was going no where until they searched me. SO I consented to be searched.
I emptied my pockets and 2 security guards proceeded to search me the must have been fags cuz they seemed to be enjoying
themselves. I was VERY worried that when they got to my ankles they would find the tape in my sock, they worked their way
down, got to my ankles and the guy on my right side rubbed all around my ankle and the top of my shoe, the guy on my left
side simply rubbed the area and apparently didnt feel anything. THE TAPE WAS IN MY LEFT SOCK!
When they were done I looked at the main security guard and said 'are you happy now?', 'can I go?' and he said yes, And then I
looked at the Police Officer and said to him 'I hope your proud of yourself, you just stood by as my civil rights were violated'
and I walked away and went home.
I shared a few songs of this in torrents as hidden add ons or easter eggs but never the full show...until now
Enjoy!

The band has been clear and very fair about fans trading and sharing shows. And have been clear that SELLING them is a no-no.
I'm glad that the recording is out there to be shared - now. And the band probably wouldn't mind that now... BUT... under the circumstances of that day... not wanting any pictures of the set, video or audio and such to get out, it was understandable that the band took a hard line on audio / video.
But again, for the guy to tape the show and then be a d@#k to the cops... bad form.
