I didn't even thought about the writer. Sounds quite interesting too, probably a bit more realistic too...Anyway..
  2. Bump bump bump

I guess it's time for the next song...any suggestions?
  3. I think that this song relates to the break up of Edges marriage. I really don't know why. I might have read something about it ages ago. 'No blood thicker than ink'. marriage certificate?
Father to son - not sure. But that's what I think.

    Hi All

    Hi All
    Lady G

    wow...hey Lady G...it's been a loooooooong time
Are we bumping this? We'll soon have 11-12 new tracks to analyze!
  5. just to revive this, and also because I'm bored and a bit depressed today, here's a little something about the song In God's Country, and I think it goes with Obama's inauguration

The song describes the beauties of America while at the same time stating that it went wrong
somewhere, referring mostly to political issues.

    Yeah
    Desert sky
    Dream beneath a desert sky
The rivers run but soon run dry
    We need new dreams tonight

Descriptions of landscapes in America, and also the dream that existed there and different dreams that are running like rivers, but will soon run dry. They need a new dream tonight.

    Desert rose
Dreamed I saw a desert rose
Dress torn in ribbons and in bows
Like a siren she calls to me

In his dreams he would see a rose in a desert...he dreams of the smallest sign of hope in this hopeless world. The two other lines...not sure, maybe they're describing a victim he saw in that central america trip he had...

    Sleep comes like a drug
    In God's Country
    Sad eyes, crooked crosses
    In God's Country

The realization of the lost dream in America...sleeping and forgetting about it all is like a drug to everyone...in god's country which is America. Sad eyes and ...

    Set me alight
We'll punch a hole right through the night
    Everyday the dreamers die
See what's on the other side

He's trying to give hope to everyone, give energy. Set me alight (probably praying to God), give me the energy to make a hole in this darkness and find light. I'm not sure about the two last lines, maybe dreamers die TO see what's on the other side, to see if there is a God that can help them.

    She is liberty
And she comes to rescue me
    Hope, faith, and vanity
    The greatest gift is gold

She is the Statue of Liberty. Liberty is talked about in that land, hope and faith is all they talk about, but the truth is that all they care about is gold.

    Sleep comes like a drug
    In God's Country
    Sad eyes, crooked crosses
    In God's Country

    The chorus again...

    Naked flame
She stands with a naked flame
I stand with the sons of Cain
Burned by the fire of love
Burned by the fire of love

The statue again, and her torch. She stands there, a sign of America and what it's supposed to be, but Bono prefers to stay with the sons of Cain, as seen by american politicians...those outcast countries and people, he prefers to stay with them who have been burned by that so called "fire of love" which is caused by the US.

More on fire of love: Probably meaning that what america does in other countries saying it's for love, hope, faith, liberty and democracy and to help all countries is like a fire, burning those outcast people.
  6. About that last part

You know the bible says that the sons of Cane are from the devil and also who stands with them...?
Maybe Bono refers to that ?

Maybe it would be cool to analyze all 12 tracks one by one, starting with GYBO

And I'll give my view on In Gods Country later

I would take it this way then...the US government considers some countries to be the Cains of our time (axis of evil, anyone?) and whoever supports them or stands with them to be as bad (again, bush's "you're either with us or against us" comment comes to mind, even tho this song is 20 years old).
The US is like (or feels like) the god of countries, therefore it allows itself to mark countries as evil or good. But Bono won't accept that, he will stand with those considered "sons of Cain".
  9. I believed it's best to post this in a round table rather than the lyrics discussion topic of the album, you can copy it there if you think it fits there best gerard, jeremy, dan, remy, sergio, whoever

The future needs a big kiss
    Winds blows with a twist
Never seen a moon like this
    Can you see it too?

Who needs a big kiss? Someone sad, hopeless, just to give them hope. So this is it, the future has been kinda hopeless, it needs to be given some hope. He's never seen a moon like this. What is a moon? The only natural element of light in the darkness of the night. It's hope. He sees a new moon, he has never seen such a moon, a big hope. Can you see it too?

    Night is falling everywhere
    Rockets at the fun fair
    Satan loves a bomb scare
    But he won’t scare you

The darkness (=hopelessness!) is taking the whole world. The next line, I know it bring images of a carnival kind of thing, but I see it in another way, don't see them as "fun" rockets, it's war rockets at the fun fair...i.e. bombing civilians, wars in civilian areas, where people are trying to have fun (reminds me of bombed weddings in Iraq)...

The Satan lines are amazing. He loves to see people scared, but he won't scare anyone himself. 2 points of view here, you tell me which one is best:

    1. It's about governments (referred to as Satan ) who like to have their people scared, but obviously they can't do it themselves, they'll have others blow up bombs to scare people, they love a bomb scare (governments that want to cause fear in their people to give them reason to do illegal stuff...could refer to Bush, Israel, etc.)...making up enemies for them.

    2. It's about terrorists, they love to cause a bomb scare, but he's giving us hope: "They won't scare you, right?"

    Hey, sexy boots
    Get on your boots, yeah

The whole boots thing I see it in 3 ways:

    1. Get on your boots and start rebuilding the world, the hope...let's all get together and fix everything.
    2. Get on your military boots and go to war...it's words of the Satan above.
    3. He's asking that Satan guy above, to get on his boots and go away...goes with the "Bossy Boots" line later on as well.

    Help me...which one?!

You free me from the dark dream
    Candy floss ice cream
    All our kids are screaming
    But the ghosts aren’t real

That hope he found or his love, has freed him from that dark dream of the world. He's starting to see things right. The ice cream line, I don't get it really, maybe it's a description of the dream, cause...Candy floss ice cream?! weird
The two last lines go with the previous verse...of people scared of stuff that really aren't that scary. It goes with the governments scaring their people line..there is nothing to be scared of, it's all made to scare you, it's an imaginary enemy...the ghosts aren't real.

    Here’s where we gotta be
    Love and community
    Laughter is eternity
    If joy is real

What we gotta be...nothing to explain here. If there is real joy in the world, there will be an eternity of happiness...let's get there.

    You don’t know how beautiful
You don’t know how beautiful you are
You don’t know, and you don’t get it, do you?
You don’t know how beautiful you are

Don't you know how beautiful you are? Your soul, your mind? Don't let it get dirty with all the shit going on in the world...let's fix it.

    That’s someone’s stuff they’re blowing up
    We’re into growing up
    Women of the future
    Hold the big revelations

First line is one of those illegal acts the government is doing, but we are going to grow up and not be one of the scared kids in the previous verses. The last two lines...not sure, maybe just hoping that the people of the future will fix it all...specially the women (Bono's usual respect for women).

    I got a submarine
    You got gasoline
I don’t want to talk about wars between nations

I don't know what other see here, but to me it's this: I got a submarine, the west, the ones with the high technology and great armies, You got gasoline, that's the middle east, they need the gasoline to run their submarine...BUT, he doesn't want to go to WAR for that gasoline, like the many other recent wars, he wants a peaceful cooperation.

    Not right now

    Hey sexy boots...
    Get on your boots, yeah
    Not right now
    Bossy boots

Not now...now is not the time for wars, it's time to rebuild. The boots have been explained above.

    You don’t know how beautiful
You don’t know how beautiful you are
You don’t know, and you don’t get it, do you?
You don’t know how beautiful you are

    Hey sexy boots
I don’t want to talk about the wars between the nations
    Sexy boots, yeah

    Let me in the sound
    Let me in the sound
Let me in the sound, sound
Let me in the sound, sound
    Meet me in the sound

For the "Let me in the sound" I'd like to go with what one of the guys said in the lyrics topic, he wants to join the sound of many people fighting for freedom and peace, he asks us to meet him there too.

    Let me in the sound
Let me in the sound, now
    God, I’m going down
    I don’t wanna drown now
    Meet me in the sound

He's so tired of the current conflicts, he feels he's going down...but he doesn't want to drown...so let's all meet in the sound and fix this!

Long rant...sorry, but please let me know what you think.
  10. Hi Ali
I knew that if anyone was going to post their views on this one before me it had to be you. What you are saying is brilliant. This is not just a 'filler' which is what is being said by some. It's a song with a very strong point and I think that you have got it. There's just something that I would like to add, I think that this song is relevant to the new US President Barack Obama. I think that Bono is telling him to get on his boots and and work for peace. 'Sexy boots' as opposed to war boots.
At the inauguration concert when interviewed afterwards Bono said that they really wanted to do their new son and joked about 'That shows how shallow they are'. Mabe the airing of this single was held back because they intended it for that occasion and possibly were not allowed to do it, by whoever, because it would seem that they were taking an opportunity to promote their song.
It is interesting to think of this being the first song released on this album and Vertigo being the first on the last album. I believe that these two songs are exact opposites of how Bono feels towards the US presidency. Vertigo explains that he is walking with people of great importance in the world (in great heights) but would really not be there. (But we have discussed this before so I won't waffle on too much)
P.S. two common symptoms of vertigo are nausea & vomiting !

GOYB - is a song to celebrate a person who I'm sure Bono will be more than happy to be associated with.

Ok you beat me to it. But I had to add my two pence worth didn't I ?

    Lady G
  11. Loved your thoughts Ali!!
    good job!!
and Lady G, also, pretty good....

To me it's a very complicated song.... I'm still trying to figure out what the symbols mean, but thanks to both of you, I now may have a lead, and hopefully I'll get the picture....
    thanks!!
  12. Hi Lady G...I'm glad you liked me view of it, means a lot
To be honest, what you're saying is how I saw it, but I posted my thoughts in an ambiguous way to not offend anyone and also to leave it open to anyone's own interpretation. The way I see it, the moon, the hope, the light, that's Obama and that "bad guy" or satan thing would be bush... I like your idea about the boots too, sounds better than the other ones, and also goes with the bossy boots thing. Anyone think we got the whole song right?

Like your Vertigo // Boots idea too...interesting stuff, and yes, Vertigo describes how he felt around those politicians...
