1. Temporary hold for us all to review the bootleg of the month. Kick off again next weekend.
  2. 1993-08-18 Cardiff

    Performance:
I think this was an on-par performance. The Fly was very good if you could get past the sound. I thought the Babyface performace rocked. It's a little laid back kind of song and I like it. It's one of my favorites from Zooropa and probably the best version I've heard on a boot. Stay was an absolute dissappointment for me. Maybe it was the boot sound. I've just heard better versions. Desire was a good one. Nice snippet of The First Time. I'd say the highlights for me were Babyface, Ultraviolet, and One. Yes, I said One. It's nice to hear this song from another place. I'm referring to the Vertigo performaces. I've heard so many and tend to skip it on those boots. I support ending poverty but the speech just gets tiring after you've heard it so many times. I like the Zootv version because it's pure.

    Audience:
It felt like audience participation wasn't the greatest. I think they got more into the Dancing Queen part of the show than the U2 songs. It's fun and spontaneous but it seemed like that was the highlight for the audience.

    Sound:
Very muffled and hard to hear Bono. Also because Bono is minimal here, Edge's vocals seem out of tune on a few songs. I don't think there is a standout here as far as sound goes. Nothing I could grab onto and "feel" the performace.

    Overall:
This was a good show but not a good boot. I'd say this is only for everyone who attended the show. I give this one a 3.0

  3. Sounds like a plan, Dan!
See you all back here on Sunday, but still keen to see the rest of the reviews for Cardiff!

Sounds like the consensus so far is that it would have been a great show to attend but sound lets the boot down badly.

  4. schoolwork got me tied up....I'll post my thoughts tomorrow asap

    Indeed

On that note, I feel I must just stick up for the audience as a couple of ouhsve saidthat they only seem into it for Dancing Queen. Not true.
I agree the audience is most audible on that track, but you can only really hear them onthe acoustic set or when Bono is A Capella. They're just asaudible for Angel of Harlem and Stay. This is a reflectionof bootleg quality, nothing more. Recording simplyisnt good enough to pick up the singing during the loud tracks.

Trust me, I knew people there and I've been to Cardiff gigs. It's loud.

I agree with you. I'm sure the Cardiff crowd is fantastic. I just felt in terms of the "boot", it affects how you perceive the concert. I usually attempt to listen beyond that but this boot was a very difficult listen for me. Some parts sounded very good but others were not.

  7. I might have to wait until friday for any free time....schoolwaork and more projects
  8. (Late as always, but at least this time I'm not the only one - staring at the sun )

    1993-08-18 Cardiff

    Performance:
Pretty good. Band was really into it, after all this is a Zooropa show, and they made a good performance all throughout the show. Special mentions for Bullet The Blue Sky (dunno why, but every single version of Bullet they played on the 1993 summer -Sarajevo wars, you know- were specially strong, had some special energy that made them special), Desire and Ultraviolet. Also the setlist worked very very well, although they could have rehearsed the new songs a bit more (Babyface was ¬¬).

    3,5 / 5

    Sound:

Jeremy's words are a fantastic summary of the sound quality of the show. It sounds off, muffled and very very annoying sometimes (Numb, Stay, Running and Pride were painful to hear lol). Not good at all, specially considering all the great audience recordings we have from that era/year/leg/month...

    2 / 5

    Audience:

They were really enthusiastic, as always on Cardiff. Good crowd. Nothing else.

    4/5

    Overall:
A good show if you are a completist, or if you wanna have a nice Zooropa setlist and an enthusiastic crowd. If you look for great performances or great sound, better go for Verona, London or Dublin...

    3,5/5
