1. It's so overplayed, and even though it's a great song (studio recording is just OMG, moreover it marked a landmark for U2, and it's a really beautiful song, it's message is strong and still alive) I always skip when listening to bootlegs. Except when playing a Zoo TV gig, which I always let play in its entirety

  2. Tommorow, I Threw A Brick, and Gloria are all in my top 30 U2 songs of all time.

  3. For me, it's an album that works, much like Drew was saying about JT somewhere else...the songs you mentioned are personal favourites of mine from October aswell, must be said.

  4. It's growing on me lol.....

The only real stinkers IMO are With a Shout, Scarlet and Is That All?
  5. Pride is too overused and overblown, it should be dropped. Replace it with Ultraviolet or something. I think sentimentality has got the better of the band and they keep it as an permanent ode to MLK, (I think they should use MLK instead, if they have to have such a song at every show)

And sdking I was just clarifying what you meant, the second paragraph of my post suggested what I actually thought you meant in your OP.

And what's wrong with Grace, it's a fine quiet song with nice ambience and good lyrics, maybe it doesn't have any guitar solos but it is definitely not their worst song.

Also I must confess that I used October as an example of a stinker primarily because a lot of people see it as such, I personally haven't listened to it in a long time, I'll get the remastered editon and see if it's really as bad as everyone thinks it is.

However I really see U2 as a 'late flowering' band in that their early stuff was nothing exceptional (until War), in contrast to bands like the Killers, which got huge critical/commercial success right from the start.

Surely by "nothing exceptional" you mean not extremely popular? Because Boy is one of the best albums they've ever made. I take your point that they didn't set the world alight in the early 80's. It took War and later TUF to gain some momentum.

Rejoice is a great one too, I love that riff. And I also like I Fall Down, except for the chorus:
    I fall down
    I'm falling down
    I fall down
    When you fall down
    When I'm falling down
    Is when you're falling down
    When you fall down
    I fall down
