Beautiful Day --> a-ha - The Sun Always Shines On TV

Vertigo --> Sonic Youth - Dirty Boots/ Ramones - Pinhead/ Joy Division - Sound Of Music/ The Supremes - You Keep Me Hanging On

HMTMKMKM --> T-Rex - Children of the Revolution

Similarities like these are very different from what Oasis does and Coldplay has now done. Some things happen...no harm intended, call it coincidence. Some others things also happen, but they are a bit more malicious, call it rip off.

Well, that "coincidence" can also come intentionally. I agree that it's pretty striking on Viva, though - but then again, I wonder why noone freaked out when 'Talk' was released.

They got permission to use that riff...that is why. They probably realised that it was very apparent and decided to ask for permission. This time with Satriani they decided to take the risk.
  4. What about that Oasis/Doors clip I psoted earlier? I don't care if artist get their inspiration from others but a bit of originality isn't that bad.

Anyway, I'll still sing along with Viva in September in Nijmegen lol
  5. Coldplay ROCKS!!!!
Satriani is one of the finest, but.... I'll stick with Coldplay for the time being... it's not like they've ripped the whole song from him... so whatever... if you're song wasn't a hit... it's you to blame... (imo)...

Ah okay, so it's the lack of permission that you have a problem with?

  7. The problem is making money with somebody else's creation. It is called stealing. As far as I know, when the names of the Kraftwerk guys appeared there, they are getting some money out of it. Also, the problem is the lie. They are taking somebody else's creation and claiming that they made it. That is just dirt.
  8. The Verve had the permission to use the sample from The Last Time and eventually didn't make any money from their greatest hit Bittersweet Symphony. Let's see what happens to Viva la Vida...

I doubt that Coldplay intentionally copied that guitar riff. If they wanted, they would have asked the permission as they did with Talk. For sure, there are similarities, but it's not like they copied the whole song or arrangement, so I don't see the "lie" argument. I also doubt that they needed it to make money.
To me, the similarities are like the ones on HMTMKMKM and Children of the revolution or "Amazing" and A man and a woman. I can't see a plagiarism as you do. So we'll have to agree to disagree, I guess.

    Coldplays official position:
"With the greatest possible respect to Joe Satriani, we have now unfortunately found it necessary to respond publicly to his allegations. If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him. Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write or have any influence upon the song Viva La Vida. We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this and wish him well with all future endeavours. Coldplay."

I agree, like Jeremy said a while back, there are only so many notes to be found in chords and keys, and perhaps they use the same chords - so what? Chord progressions are universal, and as for the melody line, people are gonna sometimes hit on melodies that are similar, if not identical, through chance, e.g. I remember listening to a Vertigo performance of Walk On from the 3rd leg of the Vertigo tour where Edge plays an extended solo, and this was the first time I'd heard it, but like through the way the music went, you could sort of predict where he was going with the solo as he played it.
  11. It is really impossible to know if it was intentional or not. But I simply believe and support the artist that I am a fan of, and I don't like Coldplay because I feel that they are unoriginal. I am expecting Satriani to win on the courts. If I was rude in some moment of the discussion I am sorry, I just feel somehow "hurt" too.

I do agree on that - the key issue is that nobody but Coldplay is going to know whether there was any intentional similarities etc., and if they stand up and say that they did categorically not copy Satriani's work, then I think that should be the end of it, because no matter how much people suspect or not, there's only one way to know.

I don't think you were rude in any way mate, you were holding up your side of the argument which is fair enough
