    True. (Not sure what you mean by blazed).

    But in the circles I move in, I would be all 'fucked' up and not 'messed' up. I suspect they changed it for the album simply because it was felt unsuitable and they didn't want a parental advisory sticker on there.

    thats just it! its unsuitable! there is no need for it, why use lyrics that some would not like? and it wouldnt have had the sticker because nothing happened about the swear words in acrobat.

  4. I think that's what makes U2 so great live AND why boots never get boring...every gig is different due to lyric changes, sudden snippets and little mistakes.
    It would be boring if they performed every song exactly inbetween the lines...

    I have nothing against "I had an opera in my head", and just a little against "fucked up" instead of "messed up" (there's no need to swear and it sort of ruins the impression by a small degree). What I can't stand however is that he sings (for instance) "I was all fucked up, I had an opera in my head. You're love was like a light-bulb, it just goes/went over my head", because he repeats head at the end of both sentences, which is a "cheap rhyme" as far as I'm concerned. Bono would've been (possibly also will be ) much better of with the actual lyrics in this case, even though I enjoy many of his alternations.

    Don't most of you agree "Opera in my head", "Light bulb hanging over my bed" is a lot better? ^^

    It's kinda annoying, such rhyme, but I wouldn't care to much about it. The rest of the song is awesome, why letting one word ruining it for you? Just ignore I'd say

    I agree. It's an important part of what makes them such a great live band. It's just this particular case I'm not happy with (and a FEW select others )

    I get it. You don't like swearing. That's fair enough. But the vast majority of the adult world do use it and I certainly expect that rock-stars do. It's not like U2 cuss unnecessarily or with absurd frequency. Just occasionally. Harry and I like the added 'flavour' it adds to the song(s). You don't. End of.

  11. I never said anywhere that I felt swearing was preferable to not swearing, but on the same note, it is not a matter of any great concern to me. I would also like to point out at this juncture that I was quoting, it was not needless use of so-called expletives and if that is the case, I apologise, but we clearly have different perceptions to the concept of swearing.

    To me, swear words are just words - they are sounds to which people associate meaning and in that respect, we all have different perceptions of different words and sounds. The taboo around swearing really irritates me because to me, swear words are (as Dan said) a release of emotion as much as anything. If I stump my toe or inadvertently do something that incites pain, I will no doubt say "ah sh*t" or "oh for f*** sake" because it is a collection of sounds that I use to express that emotion, and pretty much everyone else I know associates with that idea. If I were to say "I was all messed up", it doesn't convey the same power and conviction of the way I feel as if I were to say "I was all f***ed up" because the physicality of actually saying it reflects the emotion of the statement. I do not swear needlessly, I use it as a mechanism to convey emotions/feeling or a point that I feel other words would not satisfactorily achieve, and if you don't like that, I'm sorry but clearly in this respect we shall have to agree to differ.

    I don't agree, I'm afraid - to my mind, that's just being perdantic in the extreme. If Adam were to constantly play a dud note in the bassline, or if Edge constantly arsed up his guitar part, or Bono were to sing out of key (something he is not unknown to do), or if Larry just tore his snare drum to pieces everytime they played the song, THAT would get to me because it ruins the song as a musical piece. Whatever intentional lyrical changes Bono makes, however, they always contribute to the song in some way, shape or form, and if they're unintentional, they're something to put down in the diary, e.g. a particular performance of When Love Came To Town where Bono forgets the lyrics completely and makes it up on the spur of the moment. Accidental, but brilliant at the same moment.

    Mark, you DO have an ounce of common sense hidden away in there (just messing mate)
