  1. Most U2 fans would agree that any "Album of the Year" awards would go to U2 for their albums in 1987 and 1991 (tho I might give '91 to Nirvana - I know, heresy!) Are there any other years (albums) you'd give them the "Album of the Year" award? Was "Boy" the best album of 1980? "War" the best album of '83? I mean, for instance, we can agree that Radiohead's "OK Computer" beats "Pop" in 1997, and Prince's "Purple Rain" beats "Unforgettable Fire" in 1984, but perhaps you disagree? Just asking for a purely objective view of album merit in its year of release.

    1987 - yes

    1991 - yes from most, although agree that some would put Nevermind above it.

    1997 - no.

    2000 - possibly, although I think AROBTTH (Coldplay) was released then too?

    2004 - doubt it.

    2009?? Hope so

  3. Wait, are we talking about the Grammys etc. or the actual release date of the album? 'Cause HTDAAB was a 2004 release right? Even as 2005 goes, I think X&Y was better, personally, but hey ho lol...I can never get my head around the whole awards crap...

    Same here, because what the hell makes their opinion so much more important than mine? Awards don't make a difference to me honestly [unless U2 lost to like Jay-Z or whatever (which is possible with today's music world:| :N :r)]
  5. I'm just thinking an "Album of the Year" award based on artistic merit more than units sold. The Grammys focus more on units sold, so they're nothing to go by. It's just in what years from 1980 to the present do you think U2 legitimately released the best album of that year?
  6. any U2 album is always the best of the year .....in terms of mainstream music though, I think it's usually true
  7. I think that Joshua, Rattle, Achtung, Pop and The Bomb have that honour. War was defeated by MJ's Thriller of course, and Prince's Purple Rain won over TUF... Have no idea about the 80-82 releases (anyway, October cannot be Album of the year in any year ), but in 2000 there were several great releases, which defeated Leave Behind for sure...
  8. Lets be honest....Rattle & Hum and Pop wouldn't win Album of the Year.
  9. I don't know. I'd have to go U2 for '87, Public Enemy (w/ honorable mention to Tracy Chapman) for '88, Nirvana for '91 and certainly Radiohead for '97. U2 comes close to having the best album for '91. 2000 is a good question. Again, Radiohead had a great album that year, too, as did PJ Harvey.
