1. Well, Coldplay must surpass U2 in my opinion before they can be compared to what are widely regarded as superpowers. The Beatles, Elvis, Bob Dylan and so forth.

Katherine is right, though only 14 she seems to be the one with more musical sense.

While the Beatle's music may not sound particularly innovative today, it was unlike anything else back in the 60s.

To sound like nothing else at the time, while still enjoying unbelievable mainstream success and airplay, is an incredibly hard thing to do.

They should get credit not only for their influence their music had on rock today, but also their massive influence on pop culture.

Put simply; if the Beatles never existed, rock & pop as we know it would probably also never exist, and U2 mightn't sound like U2 at all.

    Thank you

Indeed, Coldplay's good, but are they that good? no.
  3. Point 1: Yes, the Beatles are probably the most influential band ever. I definitely agree with that.
Point 2: No, they do not deserve the fanfare they have. They're not that good.
Point 3: The Beatles were amazing! . However, they were ahead of their time. If they had an era such as POPMart, they would have been unreal!!
Point 4: Yes, Coldplay are definitely that good. I understand why a lot of people disagree with that statement, and I understand why. They just haven't had a peak period yet, like U2 did with the Joshua Tree. I say give them an album or two, and we'll see some amazing stuff .
Point 5: How did Bob Dylan end up in here?

Thanks for letting me rant lol

  4. It's not like we could stop you lol...that's the crew's job...

Go easy on Bob Dylan, he might not be a fantastic singer but he's one of the most influential songwriters to have ever lived, and deservedly gets the recognition for it.

Anywho, c'mon people, let's get back to the topic Biograph1985 opened or continue it in GC

Exactly, Coldplay hasn't had that peak, once they do, I will gladly put them up there with other legends
They did have their own version of POPmart, it was called the Summer of Love
    They are that good
I'm not sure how Bob Dylan got here either

Also someone mentioned Elvis Chuck Berry could kick his ass

    To get back on topic:
George was freaking amazing even if he didn't like U2

They might not reach that peak (although I thought VLV was it), as they're quitting at the end of 2009.
  7. I shouldn't be getting so off topic on my own topic, but Coldplay is in a class BELOW U2 and Radiohead, and U2 (and Radiohead) are in a class below The Beatles and Dylan. Dylan got in here 'cos he's the only artist mentioned in any of this who is The Beatles' equal. (Yeah, Chuck Berry comes close.) Dylan is a fantastic singer if Bono and John Lennon are your benchmarks for great singing. He's not if Celine Dion is your benchmark. But I am adding to the digression.

here's the Rock Spectrum for ya:

    Bob Dylan
    U2
    Coldplay
    Bon Jovi

  8. I think any band which is advertised as the "greatest band of all time" is overrated.

First of all, you'd have to explain the criteria by which you decide. Anyone with a different criteria will come to different conclusions.

Based on the individual musicianship I believe the award has to go to Cream, Queen or Koinonia. Based on record sales... either Michael Jackson or the Beatles, I'd guess. Based on influence to pop history I'd guess U2, the Beatles, the Hendrix Experience, Chuck Berry or Bob Dylan (IMHO Coldplay aren't up there yet). Based on artistic independence I'd vote for U2, Metallica or David Bowie. Based on personal preference... obviously ANY BAND.

I do like George's contributions to the Beatles. "While my guitar gently weeps" and "Here comes the sun" have a well- deserved place in pop history. Even if the famous solo was played by Clapton.

  9. So George Harrison wasn't a U2 fan. So what? Does it really matter? If Harrison wanted to get snooty about ANY band, well, that was up to him. The Beatles were a great, great band and their influence is almost beyond measure and Harrison was certainly welcome to his opinion - but that's all it was. Opinions are like arseholes - we've all got one. Mind you, if RINGO had a word or two to say... Not only was Ringo not the best drummer in the world, he wasn't even the best drummer in The Beatles

    Agreed
I think we're done here lol
