In my school singing in English would likely net you a detention, we never did singing in any of our subjects (including music) throughout all my middle/high school years.

In Australia singing in schools is only really done in primary. And in high school (includes middle school here) the only time you get to sing (unless you're in the choir or a musical) is in assembly where we're supposed to sing the national album.
