1. Thanks for posting Nicole, great to hear impressions without the hype.

Though the fact that he wasn't sure whether he liked it or not, is a bit worrying.
The lead single should be immediately likeable, like BD and Vertigo were.

Oh well, maybe the Croatians will leak it early again, so we can have a listen for ourselves.
  2. Thanks for that, Nicole. An interesting read for sure.

And as far as him not knowing if he likes it...I wouldn't worry too much about that. Probably just trying to cover his own ass.

That's the best part for me. I don't think that a lead single should be immediately likeable. Imho, th best albums are those that need to be explored, not the "easy listening" stuff.

I'm all for layered songs with deep meanings, but the lead single usually has to appeal to the public not only U2 fans, we all know how much they like their album sales. And why can't it be easy to listen to while retaining depth? that's not an easy thing to do for most bands, but not U2 - at least going from previous singles.

Completely agree with Yeah here. The best albums are the ones who grow on you, same goes for singles. The fact that the DJ didn't compare it to Vertigo or BD says something. The lyrics don't seem to be that good, but if the music's right I can live with it.
  7. 11 songs???
Where the hell is that 50-60 songs??

This is all good in my opinion. For months now we've been hearing Bono, Daniel Lanois et al bang on about "sonic innovation" and about how they've broken new ground with this record. Well by the sounds of that review, it looks as if they have.

If something is truly innovative, then of course it's going to sound strange to your ears at first - it was exactly the same case with the Fly, and look how that's turned out in terms of U2's canon & songbook.

U2 can afford to release a less-than-immediately-catchy first single. People love them, loathe them, are intrigued by them to such a degree that they'll give it more than a few turns to delve into the music. This is exactly what I was hoping to hear anyway, and from a DJ with provenance and a seemingly good intuition. We've had BD & Vertigo; people have been harking back to the days of AB; and this is the first indication that we may really have something new on our hands here - bring on the noise!!

couldn't have said that better...can't wait

  10. So did you expect an album with 50 songs? These are all scratches or rare riffs that will see daylight at some time, but not now. I can live with possible 11 tracks.
