1. Actually the Rics and Gretsch sound different. Ric's are a bit more jangly (think early REM, The Byrds, The Romantics - to name a few)

Assuming the p'up comparison is between those on the Country Club and the Ric "High Gain" p'ups?

The p'ups on Bono's Country Club are DynaSonics (single coil) vs. the FilterTrons (humbucker) that are on Country Gents.

One can get a Country Club with FilterTrons and a Bigsby...

And yes, the Cadillac Green finish is indeed 'delicious'.
  2. Say what you might about Bono's guitar playing... and many have unfairly mocked it... He's got some nice acoustics AND electrics.\

How about this lovely Gibson Les Paul?

Bono played this guitar for "Last Night On Earth" at various shows during the 1997-98 PopMart tour.

The Edmonton YouTube footage (left) also shows him playing this guitar.

Foxboro, MA "Last Night On Earth" with hologram finish

Judging by the video shots from behind Bono during the Edmonton footage, it seems that this guitar might actually his Black Les Paul with the hologram sticker affixed to it. You can see black on the back of the hologram model, later pics of this guitar show that it is all hologram (the rest of the finish / sticker finally applied?

Here's the Black LP I am referring to

Here is video of Bono playing the black LP on "Last Night On Earth" opening night of Popmart:

Whether it was the weight of the guitar or merely preference of tone, both Les Paul's seemed to be set aside in favor of his Gretch Tennessean and the two sparkle finish ES-175's.

Perhaps the Les Paul's were being used because the ES-175's hadn't arrived from the Gibson Custom Shop yet? Or merely experiementation that led him from the Les Pauls to the Tennessean, blue Gibson ES-175 and red Gibson ES175.

Whatever the case... WHERE is that Les Paul? If it was the black one finished to hologram, it's still a great sounding guitar. Even if he were to strip the hologram finish and put it back to the black finish, that is one sweet Les Paul.

As for the hologram / metallic finish model... It was used for "Last Night On Earth" at the Rotterdam show, opening night of the European Pop Mart tour. Bono was also using his black Les Paul Custom during the opening shows of PopMart.

Yeah, he does have some nice guitars. I think Edge said once (regarding his use of Bono's blue ES175 in the Ground Beneath Her Feet video) that Bono was more of a "collector" and had some very nice models that Edge got to use from time to time.

How much do you reckon one of those Custom Shop sparkle ES175s would be? My guess is I'd have to save up for a while...they look so nice!!
  4. Hey, talking about Rickenbakers...the early Beatles guitar sound...is it humubckers or singles??
I think that George is humbucker and John is single. Does anyone know about this?

The vintage Rics that the Beatles used had the low gain single coils. ("toaster tops").
  6. You misunderstood me. Nothing wrong with that, of course not I LOVE The Police, they're among my 4 favorite bands, after U2 and in the same group as Dire Straits, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles You rock a lot, Strat

No worries. I got what you meant. I just figured it'd be a bit cliche' to have worn a # shirt, like I did last time or a U2 shirt.

    =O)

And even the # shirt, last time I played, was not by design - just happened to be the shirt I had on.
  8. Watching the vid. with the black LP, but yeah Edge playing the Country Gent there lol...or something Gretschy either way, maybe the two just figured to swap models halfway through the tour...

Edge used Country Gents on Do You Feel Loved, Please, One and perhaps a few others during PopMart. I don't recall seeing any Gretsch CG's or other Gretsch's on Elevation... Wouldn't mind seeing them on the next tour. Great fun - those.
  10. Did U2 enlist a Jawa to play bass in DC? This piccy (from the rehearsal) is hilarious.

Nice bass Adam! Sweet gold sparkle finish... Looks like Adam order himself up a lil something special from the Fender Custom Shop.

    Good call Adam!
  11. And even Honest Abe seems to be looking at Larry Mullen Jr's silver sparkle Yamaha drum kit.
