    Rock and Roll has many definitions and can take on many forms. But once again, I do not wish to argue that. If you don't like my post, that is fine. I just wanted to voice my opinion.

  5. I don't see these two albums as masterpieces. ATYCLB has some very, very good songs which I adore (Ground Beneath Her Feet and When I Look at the World in particular, 2 best songs on the album imo), but it also has some songs I just can't stand to listen, like Wild Honey and Grace. Although I feel that over all it's not amazingly good, just so so, I do respect what they were trying to do here: returning to an old style, albeit with added experience from other sounds. It's not that I don't like it, it's just that a lot of other albums rank much higher in my opinion.

    HTDAAB however, is a completely different story in my book. It's the only career move they made that I just don't understand. What were they trying to do here? They already did a return-to-roots album on ATYCLB, so repeating that style would be kind of lame, especially with a four year gap between the albums. It seems however, that they were going to make their first true rock and roll album. Just plain rock and roll. And I would have loved that: and I can tell, since they released the older versions of songs on Unreleased & Rare. And I love them. That's just great raw rock 'n' roll stuff there. I even made an alternative album with all the older songs, which I enjoy very much (and way better than the final album). It also sounds like an actual album that way, lyrically and musically, not just a collection of songs. So if they would have kept it that way, I would have adored it.

    But then they decided to change all those songs, and postponed the release. Native Son became Vertigo, Tough became Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own, Xanax and Wine became Fast Cars, and All Because of You and Yahweh were re-mixed. Why the hell did they do that? You see, THAT'S what I don't like about HTDAAB: they had the opportunity to make a truly great and a unique album with a style they had never done before, but they blew it by playing it safe and overproducing the crap out of it. I don't know if it was because of the fear that public might not like it otherwise, that it was too daring in some way, but it sure is such a shame.

    Imo, this is the best album U2 have ever made. It is so uplifiting and full of soul. Whenever I am in a bad mood, I put on this record, and by the last notes of Grace, I am all smiles. No other u2 album moves my emotions like ATYCLB does. Musically, it is a wonderful combination of U2 of the 80s, U2 of the 90s, plus an added dose of raw, personal emotion never before heard on a U2 record.

    My advice to those that think ATYCLB is lame and a step back for U2:
    Next time you are in a bad mood, go home, relax, lay on the couch, close your eyes and pop this record in. I guarantee when you are finished, your mind will be at ease and you will be in a better mood. Music is supposed to move us and this album does that like no other imo.

    Imo, this is the best pure rock and roll record that U2 have ever made. HTDAAB is straight forward 21st century rock and roll and its finest. The Who's next of its generation. It rocks from beginning to end. Who cares that there are very few bleeps and whistes in there. Who cares if Bono's lyrics aren't as clever as they normally are. They are not what this record is about. It is about the power of rock and roll, pure and simple.

    My advice to those that think HTDAAB is lame and a step back for U2:
    This is very simple actually. Do what Bono says at the beginning. Turn the volume up as loud as it can go and rock the fuck out. Stop trying to find some hidden meaning or some bleep that you didn't hear the first 5 listens. I am so glad U2 took the time to made a record like this for their catelogue, because it is unlike anything they have ever done or ever will do.

    I am not trying to be a dick or anything, so please no one take offense to this post. All I am saying is that I love the last 2 records as much as I love anything U2 have ever done and I consider myself the type of fan that knows all of the material backwords and forwards. I welcome the new style that NLOTH will bring, but I will never forget the last 2 masterpieces that preceeded it. These 2 albums are both brilliant and I feel sorry for the fans that were not able to connect with them as I have been able to.

    both of those albums are in a good battle for best record. HTDAAB has a strength to it that no other album has, and that is like you said the raw energy of it. It's not U2 trying to reinvent themselves or anything, it's U2 just being U2, plugging in and playing. That was great at the time and was exactly what they needed to do. I think the band realized (perhaps) halfway through the tour and definitely when it was over that they had to go off and explore new things, which I can't wait to hear. But I have to agree with your post, for what they are they are two great great albums, pure and simple, from a band playing honest music

  8. Many of the regular posters here discovered the band with these albums, so I always had the impression that the two albums in question, compared to other boards, are getting a lot of praise at this place.

  11. I'm with you, altough I do understand that people don't like it. I think the albums themselves, the recording, how it sounds on the cd, are the best ever. On the other side I also think that the songs themselves are not all that great. I really love ATYCLB, my 3th favorite, but Wild Honey? Grace? Summer Rain? Not so much.
    And HTDAAB is pretty average for U2-standards, but you should read this as something positive. I find it remarkable that guys from 45 can still make such a great record. There are no real bad songs on this record, but, except for COBL and OOTS, there aren't real classics on there. Some people often call HTDAAB a collection of songs with no line in it, but I completely disagree with them. HTDAAB is pure rock (yes, even OSC, OOTS and Yahweh) and 21st century way of making music. And we all know that lyric from Kite: 'The last of the rock stars, when hiphop drives the big cars'
    This (HTDAAB) is one of the very last pure rock albums and it still reached #1 in every country. Says enough.

    I'm one of them...
    I just discovered U2 with HTDAAB and loved it immediately

    Why ? Well, because it sounded good for hearing the first time
    I hope you understand me if i say that some songs you love from the first time (like Vertigo for me) but they get boring after a few listenings (definately Vertigo!)

    And then there are songs that you have to dig in actually, experience what the 4 guys mean and want to tell to you
    And my oponion is, not that anyone wants it ofcourse,
    is that U2 after 30 years still is a great band because of these last type of songs !
    They had no super hits with JT or AB (while Desire from R&H was nr1)
    And these 2 albums are for most of the people their 2 biggest albums

    So to go back on topic, after a few months, i learned to know JT, AB...
    And these songs CONVINCED me of the band, they're not just a regular pop-group, but real artists !
