    Exactly

Very true. If you grew to love U2 with these albums then you are likely to love them. If you didn't, like me (and you) then they will feel a little of a let down (or more).

I personally remember loving them both for a few weeks when they came out but now I listen to only a handful of the songs regularly and never to the albums as a whole. I can't say that about TUF, Boy, AB, JT, Zooropa and Pop

  3. With or without you and I still haven't found were #1 in the US. So was the Fly in the UK.

Sorry, that was the smart ass me.
  4. I prefer ATYCLB above HTDAAB which I rarely listen to. HTDAAN was indeed a huge let down. I became a fan between Pop and ATYCLB but the album that made me a fan was The Joshua Tree. I adored ATYCLB in the beginning but I quickly realised that it wasn't their best by far.

I actually prefer the old stuff until Achtung Baby/Zooropa. Pop is good, but a bit too experimental in my book. I hope NLOTH can hook up with AB.

Funny fact..I spoke with a friend this morning who still believes ATYCLB was U2's best..because he became interested when that album just came out. Like Yeah says..the younger generation prefers ATYCLB or HTDAAB, while the 'oldies' with all due respect prefer the more experimental or 80's records.

See to me it is about opening up your mind to the present and the future and not comparing everything to the past. There are plently of older artists that I listen to that have put out unreal material in the last 5 years.

Magic - By far my favorite Bruce album ever
Chaos and Creation in the Backyard - By far my favorite Paul album
Modern Times - A top 5 Dylan album for me

I went into each of those albums with an open mind, not looking back at all toward the past, and I discovered greatness. If I went into Modern Times hoping to hear Blood on the Tracks I would have hated it. If I went into Magic hoping to hear Asbury Park I would have hated it.

Even though I was pigeon-holed as a new U2 fan, I have been a fan since the early 90's when I first really got into music.

  6. ....although to a certain extent their releases have to measure up to what they've done, and I think they do

  7. That's how I discovered all my favourite bands. Just in different times.

Who said you are a "new" fan btw.? And what would be wrong with being that?

Didn't mean to imply there was anything wrong with being a new fan.

Well there were a few posts in this thread that suggested that only new fans can truely find greatness in the last 2 albums, so I wanted to point out I wasn't a new fan.

Well, I for one find it pretty likely that people will worship the album that made them discover the band. If they didn't love it, they wouldn't have become a fan.
That doesn't mean that only new fans can truly love the Bomb or ATYCLB, though. With them a lot of the early fans that didn't like the 90's stuff got back into U2.

Very true. I was a fan of U2 for almost 10 years before I really fell in love with them, via ATYCLB.
  11. I am out for the night guys and gals. Been fun
  12. I agree with the initial poster's that all the ripping of ATYCLB and HTDAAB is ridiculous. They are better albums than Zooropa, the Passengers album, and Pop. What U2 are doing with these two albums is returning to simply being U2, a great rock'n'roll band. There are some really great songs on ATYCLB in particular, songs that are "classic" U2 songs, particularly "Beatiful Day," "Stuck In A Moment," and "Walk On." "When I Look At The World" and "Peace on Earth" are also great U2 songs. I agree that HTDAAB is overproduced, and it doesn't cohere thematically (something Bono admits). Maybe some of the original versions of the songs are better than what ended up on the album (I'm not so sure about this, though). In short, they are both good U2 albums but not their best.

That is, they are not great U2 albums. ATYCLB has some classic songs but a few mediocre ones (e.g. "Wild Honey," would have been better as a B-side). HTDAAB suffers from uninspired lyrics in places. I would give War, Joshua Tree, and Achtung Baby 5 out of 5 stars -- the three u2 masterpieces in my view. After that, I would give 4 1/2 out of 5 stars to Unforgettable Fire, ATYCLB and HTDAAB. Great U2 albums, but not definitive masterpieces. Boy, October, Rattle and Hum, Zooropa, and Pop I'd probably give 4 out of 5 stars. Passengers? 3 out of 5.

Bottom line, I'm a huge U2 album. Why else would I be posting here? With the exception of Passengers, all of their albums are awesome -- some are just more awesome than others.
