The role of Adam is great. He represents the base on which U2 constantly grow up. He is the best reference point, like Bono himself says in U2BYU2. Without Adam the balance of the band would have been unstable.
As a musician I like him even more, because of his constant selfishness and his creativity. Of course he made some of the greatest bass lines in the history of music.

A great bassist. Just watching the 2006 Buenos Aires show and he is just too cool in that, the way he walks around and smiles and just generally does bloody awesome basslines. And like some of you have said, let's not forget he has done some of the greatest basslines in history.

I'd say he's kinda the wheels in U2, it wouldn't be the same without him.

Adam is really great musician,and a good man.
I love wtching Adam on stage because he always smiles.
He's happy about being there and playing,he really enyos playing while Larry and Edge looks that they are enyoing too but they're always serious.
And Bono sometimes smiles sometimes not

You're right about Adam, Benky. But I don't agree with you about Larry and Edge. I think they look really great right for their seriousness. They look so human in their expressions, but in the same moments they are doing something that it's not human at all! Think at Edge: he seems not spending energy at all while playing, though he always make the most difficult things that you could ask to a giutarist! Hats off also for him!

In the end the U2 look really great while playing, nobody left out.

As some of you know I often talk about Adam Clayton. He is my favourite band member, purely because I think he is the coolest band member, doesn't seek the spotlight, his bass lines are outstanding (just recently heared his base lines in WTSHNN, and that blows me away) and I think that he is a bit of an outsider. Clearly he does not get the praise he deserves. We saw the best of him in the rattle and hum/lovetown era where he looked as though he was having a great time (as someone said above) although as Bono said, in the Vertigo tour Adam got his Mojo back.

I never gave Adam the credit he deserved. Bass was never an important part of U2 music (as long as Bono and Edge could be heard then that was fine) but now days every bootleg gets a bass boost and I now listen to albums just picking up on his great bass lines

. COBL stands tall as a great hook for me

Hmm i don't think i agree with you guys...

I think that Larry, with his Drums are the base of the band
And THEN it's up to Adam

The 2 of them form the base, the skeleton of the band

Edge gives the finishing touch with some great guitar solo's

And then Bono makes the show

Which is strange actually cause the popularity goes in the other direction

Adam is my second favorite after Edge, he looked so cool with his afro in the beginnings of U2. He have also a good slapping technique (Gloria, and Wire

) and he's underrated I think because some people says he sucks because the bassline is the same note x8 (like WOWY), but they don't know New Year's Day, Please, Gone, etc.. exists? Seriously, I think it's a great bass player for someone who didn't learned the bass before 1997 (I think). And on the Vertigo Tour, he was by far the most cool with the crowd, always smiling, etc... Two thumbs up for Adam
