1. 2006-11-16 - Adelaide, Australia - AAMI Stadium

    Performance:
    As with the other Vertigo 5th leg gigs, the show is full of fun and the band sound like they're enjoying themselves. I wouldn't say stunning, but way more than satisfactory. I can't be buggered to draw up a summary of everything I wrote, so I'm just gonna copy and paste my song-by-song notes;

    Main set -

COBL - good opening, not a pinnacle performance (although probably detracted by the quality of the sound more than anything)
Vertigo - couldn't really hear Edge's guitar, but a solid effort.
Elevation - no long drawn-out intro., hallelujah!
IWF - never quite the same when Bono 'says' "I will follow" in the intro. as oppposed to a gutsy shout, but a lively performance, everyone clearly lapping it up. *
NYD - just doesn't work for me without a big buildup, i.e. UTEOTW or something. Bit flat. Gets going when Edge's guitar kicks in, but still a bit...missing something. The solo always sends a shiver down my spine though - that's how to make a Les Paul sing.
Beautiful Day - meh. Interesting when Bono moves up an octave during the opening verse. Still prefer Elevation versions, felt a lot more fresh. Also feel that with Elevation versions, they felt like the complete sum of their parts, whereas with Vertigo I get the feeling that it's like a lot of parts trying to complete a sum but not quite clicking. Am also not one of those who hold much stock with the idea that the additional snippets make the song tick in a live setting.
Stuck In A Moment... - full electric, can't go wrong. A lack of crooning from Bono in the intro. also helped.*
Angel of Harlem - jaunty, fun, again prefer the Elevation versions simply because Edge's guitar had a bit more oomph, but Bono certainly seems to thrive on an old classic.
SYCMIOYO - has never struck a chord with me live, never will - same old moan from me I'm afraid. One of those songs that will never outdo the original studio version bar a really impressive reworking in the future. Please don't keep this as a staple of the live set guys.
LAPOE - the sound doesn't lend itself to the performance. Crowd seem to get louder, the band quieter, and the drums sounded slightly off-kilter...
SBS - for once, actually seemed to lift the place. Great to hear the crowd go nuts when the intro. kicks in. Raucous guitar work from Edge, Larry's drums really carrying the song, Bono seeming to audibly take off. Still not a patch on previous tours, but certainly a decent effort - suffers from the Vertigo condition of dragging on far too long though.*
Miss Sarajevo - great song, great performance, need there be any more said?*
Pride - pretty upbeat performance, great vocals from Bono (for once), wish you could hear the whole crowd "ooh-oooooh-oh" a bit more though in the outro.
Streets - uplifting performance, fairly run-of-the-mill though.
One - lowkey, but builds-up as it always does to a rousing finish. Not standout, but a nice close to the set nonetheless.

    Encore

    Zoo Station - epic.*
The Fly - not bad, but a bit run-of-the-mill until the solo. And after.
WOWY - nice performance, Bono doesn't mince the vocals as with some other Vertigo performances, really opens up now and then. Even though I do mourn the loss of the ZooTV solo, you can't deny there's something intimate and yet equally epic about the PopMart+ versions.*
TSAC - decent performance. Not a massive fan, and things seemed to get a bit pearshaped near the end but it was certainly not the crowning turd in the waterpipe.
    Desire - oh yes!*
Kite - lowkey ending, but magnificent for it. The only thing that makes Elevation performances better is Bono's rhythm guitar part, just adds a bit more to the song.*

Basically, anything with a * after it was notable in my opinion!

    Audience:
Shoot the lot of them lol (or at least, the ones near the taper). For me, there's a fine line between a bearable crowd and an unbearable crowd, and in this case they fell on the wrong side - this is sheer pickiness on my part but no one was singing in tune lol, but on the other hand I would like to think that their enthusiasm was representative of the rest of the crowd, i.e. having a damn good time Adelaide-style!

    Sound:
Probably the biggest letdown - there's very little in the way of depth, and although it's not a case of the quality of sound being crap, e.g. the band being distorted, gremlins in the speakers etc., they sound very distant and it [the recording] doesn't do them justice by bringing the different parts together as a unified ensemble. Larry is probably the most prominent, whilst Edge is least (which, for me at least, is a bit disappointing) - Bono and Adam are distinct without taking over.

    Overall:
Decent gig, a 7/10 - not amazing, but exemplary of the 5th leg of the Vertigo tour. This is already on my mp3 player anyway, and there it shall certainly stay.

Here's where our assessments differ I reckon. If the crowd are too audible in the recording I will take points off the Sound not the Audience. It's not the audience's fault they can be heard too much on the boot. An excited, participating crowd is one of the hallmarks of a great audience bootleg. Sure they can sing oiut of key if they want, but that's part of the raw fun of it. It's whether or not they are drowning out the band in the recording and that's a sound issue IMO.

Besides that I agree with most other parts of your review except for your comments on BD and Kite.

I agree it's not the audience's fault BUT on the same note, there's a point for me where they detract from the listening experience, and at times this was one of them. I grant it may seem slightly harsh BUT on the same note, that's why it's not just me or you evaluating a bootleg. On the same note, we're evaluating the bootleg, not just the show

And thanks for mentioning the bit about taking points off Sound etc., I need to stick my review on the bootleg page lol! Not to mention come up with ratings...
  4. Great review there Harry.

    Performance:
OK, my first review, for the first concert i had ever been to, and what a 1st experience it was. i was about 3m away from the left b-stage, and the whole night was f-ing amazing, i made eye contact with the edge for a few seconds, people never believe me but i have the image burnt into my memory(doesnt really prove it though), lol. The band all seemed to be in good touch, lots of bono chatter which i liked, also some nice snippets.

COBL: nice performance, some annoyying lady singing (she ruins a few songs), i loved the ending, but which south aussies wouldnt? 7.5/10

Vertigo: no snippet at the end, WTF, thats always the best part of vertigo when he gets the crowd going ala u23d, doesnt happen here so only 7/10

Elevation: like the intro chatter, one of my favourtite versions of this song, but is ruined by poor quality and that bloody lady singing. 8.5/10

    IWF: stock standard performance, 7.5/10

NYD: once again nice intro, bono talks about not performing in Adelaide for 8 years, IT WAS 13 years TO THE DAY, this supports the hypothesis of him not knowing where the hell he is 7.5/10

BD: Awesome performance with the Adelaide references, kicks arse, once again annyoing lady is singing and ruins it. 8/10

SIAMYCGOO: very well played, would be in top 3 performances of this song without a doubt, with improved audio possibly THE best, and if someone shot that annoying lady, nice tribute to Michael Hutchence. 9/10

Angel of Harlem: once again nice performance with Kylie snippet, bono possibly fuks up hes location once more, 7.5/10

SYCMIOYO: intro was good, great performance with audience singing whole way through 9/10

LAPOE: worst song on boot in terms of sound, larrys b-stage drums sound shit, and hard to hear edge's solo, 6.5/10

SBS: tribute to victims of Bali bombings was fitting, excellent performance, 9/10

    BTBS: ur usual performance, 7.5/10

Miss Sarajevo: tribute for the aussie soldiers, nothing special which makes it stand out in my mind, 7.5/10

    Pride: 7/10

Streets: loved the intro, solid performance of this epic song, 8.5/10

One: the irish drunk stuffs up he's location for the 3rd time i think, really pisses me off now that i think about it, seeing AAMI (60,000) people with their phones out was mind blowing, again, image is burnt into memory bank. The performance was also very well played, nice ending 8/10

    Zoo Station: great performance, 8/10

The Fly: Nice snippets and solo as always, 7.5/10

WOWY: NO snippets is complete BS, bono kinds sounds like hes just talking the 1st half of the song, but still a great performance. "cmon Adelaide, give us a kiss" gota love it. 8.5/10

Saints: Good performance of the #1 single in Australia at that time.

Desire: probably the highlight of the night, (or kite) unbelivably good, bono talks about the band starting off, and directs the song form there, loooved it. 10/10

Kite: all good things have to come to an end, as did this concert. A brilliant finish like most 5th leg shows, was very happy/sad for me i guess thats how ud describe it, waiting 8 months for it then realising it was all over. the night brought nothing but great memories.

    Audience:
Audience sang along with all songs, although they sometimes overpowered the band, espescially the 'annoying lady', but she has the right to sing as loud as she wants as does the rest of the audience, its the poor quality of the recording which ruins this boot imo.

    Sound:
Not the best by a long shot, i havent heard many audience recordings b4 so i cant compare but it takes alot of points away from the boot.

    Overall:
Probably being a little (or a lot) biast cause i was there, but still an amazing night, i loved it and will never forget it thanks to this boot, not as good as Sydney and melbourne only cause of the sound quality, but still a very respectable show from start to finish.

  8. 2006-11-16 - Adelaide, Australia - AAMI Stadium

    Performance:
I was a bit disappointed with this boot, to be honest. I count on 5th leg Vertigo shows for great, energetic performances with unique setlists. Decent performance overall from the boys here, but lacking a bit in energy, save for a few key performances of rare songs.

The first set seemed fairly typical, nothing special. COBL, Vertigo, and Elevation were quite punchy, I Will Follow was a nice surprise, but New Year's Day and Beautiful Day seemed to lack in energy a bit for me. The band redeem themselves with Stuck and AOH, though. I usually skip Stuck on any boot, acoustic or full electric, but this one I have to say was great. Combined with a really fun performance of AOH, these two songs were the highlight of the first set for me.

SYCMIOYO and LAPOE seemed a bit lackluster, but the crowd during Sunday Bloody Sunday lifted the energy right back up. Bono seemed to channel that energy into his stellar performance of Miss Sarajevo, one of the best performances I've heard. Close out with good performances of Pride, Streeets, and One, and the Australian crowd is loving it.

    Encore

Great, rocking performance of Zoo Station, nicely followed by The Fly. WOWY seemed to break up the set for me, both in its odd place between The Fly and TSAC and its nothing-special performance. I usually enjoy TSAC, but this was a bit of a rocky performance. Desire was the opposite--great, rocking performance again. Kite for me was the highlight--wonderful choice for a closer, and while I still prefer the Melbourne version, this is a great performance, very heartfelt and leaves me--and the Aussies--wanting more.

    3.5 out of 5.

    Audience:
At times annoying and detracting from my focus on the performance, but overall a good crowd.

    3 out of 5

    Sound:
Not great, but not horrible. The band seems really distant at times, particularly Edge, but I could still sit through it.

    3 out of 5

    Overall:
Wish I was more positive about it! Decent show overall, but to me, nothing entirely special, aside from the appearance of Kite. If you like Vertigo 5th leg (which you should) this a good boot to have.

    3 out of 5

Thanks Drew, who picks the next one?
  10. I'm out...haven't listened to it properly and a possible review of what I did hear would be too short and not worth posting. Excuse me..
