1. Yea, same here. Actually i've been listening to ZOOTV boots lately. I'm not going to ONLY listen to Boots until the new album and tour start. That's stupid. I've been listening to Zoo stuff, Zeppelin, and Pearl Jam lately. But yea, probably 95% of the stuff i listen to is still U2
  2. I have to say I haven't listened to GOYB for the last two days now; and, to be honest, I haven't missed it one bit. My liking for the song has actually waned now a lot (down from 8/10 to 5-6/10); and I don't really know why.

As a lead single, I just think it's a bit wishy-washy. I don't want another BD and definitely not another Vertigo; but, with all the hype about this being their best ever album (I didn't buy into that really, but definitely hoped for it), I kind-of expected more from the lead single.

I listened to a real sonically inventive album this morning - "In Rainbows" by Radiohead, and just got thinking that we'll all be very lucky if U2 can come anywhere close to this kind of inventiveness. I mean, Radiohead even put out a 2nd disc of cuts deemed not strong enough for the first CD; and if u2 can produce anything as simple yet beautiful as "Go Slowly" from the 2nd Rainbows CD, then we'll all be doing well.

It's just that there's a niggling doubt in my mind about GOYB - it still feels like it's lacking something. I mentioned a solo earlier on, or at least some type of crescendo-effect near the end; but, overall, one great riff does not a great song make.

Bono's lyrics - well I won't even go there; but it's his singing as well that lets me down. It really lacks...power. I mean, the vocals here should be the best take, most energetic etc. Instead we've got a lot of skit-skatting in a monotone / conversational type of voice; and then, when we hear the "Get on your boots" bit, it sounds really weak in my opinion, and for once, Edge's backing vocals detract from it rather than add, as they're too high, and the result is a very wishy-washy, girly-type of chorus even.

I mean, when the Fly came out, I listened to it day after day, and couldn't get enough of Edge's guitar work and that amazing solo. Now, with GOYB, I honestly wouldn't mind if I don't hear it again for ages, and that's worrying for this particular u2 fan!!

Anyway, I do love "In Rainbows" but I nearly always skip the first track - "15 steps"; so I'll allow one duff track on the album. Let's just hope the rest of NLOTH is stellar work. BTW - early judgement, I know, but for this album to really be U2's best, then every single song on it would have to be really good / great, which I think you can realistically level at the songs on JT & AB.

So, neither of those are under threat at the moment; but I can live with a 3rd best album.

    Rant over - cheers!!
  3. GOYB has feckin brought me to the auto-destructive only-U2-listening spiral again... Damn xD

Good to hear your honest story and thoughts. I actually wonder what Bono and co. will think of this all. The surely must know the public's reaction to the song is so-so.

Is it, dare I say, not catchy enough for a first-up offering?

  6. It is catchy, but the U2-bashing already started right after these first notes on Fanning's show. I just don't know for the moment.
  7. I have to say that i haven't stopped listening to the single, the next day after the premiere, i had it on non stop, i don't think i have ever done that before, i just couldn't get enough of it.

That bridge / chorus is just magic, when Actung Baby came out, it really took me a while to get into it, The Fly is a bit up & down, Zooropa was a miss for me, still haven't really got into it, Pop, even though it was a flop, i really enjoyed that album, although i can't stand Discoteque.

ATUCLB also had to grow on me, but Beautiful Day was instant, Vertigo was also instant with me, and i rate the Atomic Bomb album amongst their best, i had that album on repeat so many times it wasn't funny.

When i first heard Boots, it was like someone stuck the boots into me, it was an instant love affair, and that love keeps growing, its very more-ish. its a very "cool" song.
  8. I was playing Zooropa yesterday and one of my brothers came into the room (the one who doesn't really listen to U2) and asked: 'Is that from their new record?'. 'No, it's Zooropa, a somewhat experimental album released as a spin-off to Achtung Baby in 1993', I replied.

Wonder what he said next...'It's the same piece of shit as Get On Your Boots'. To me, it was funny to hear from a non-U2 fan that the first single reminds people to Zooropa.
  9. Hmmm, I'm now perfectly comfortable listening to it as a U2 track, I mean, I don't have that sense of "this is a new song", I already get the feeling that it's a U2 song - it just feels slightly up in the air because there's nothing else to put up with it lol (i.e. no other stuff of the same era to say 'this is U2 in 2009' etc.). It's not a completely awesome song etc., like, there are things I have slight issues with (Bono's lyrics, as mentioned previously, aren't exactly wordsmithian, and at times I don't like the sound of Adam's bass although the bass part itself is pretty rocking) but that said, there are very few studio songs that I can't pick holes in - that's not to say I don't love them, though

I'm getting there, but shit it's taken some work. My favourite U2 tracks haven't taken this long.
  11. Its funny how most people dont rate the lyrics, is this casue they have no meaning (that we can make out atm) or just casue its ryming stuff? "laughter is eternity, if joy is real" thats probably one of my favourite lines from the song, and its true, if u r truely joyful (happy) u will always be laughing.

lyrics are a big problem for me. Verses are cool, the choruses (both of them) ain't.
