1. As far as I know... it depends on what kind of sound you desire and how good the wood has been pre- selected. Alder is said to be more consistent in quality than ash. Ash varies in quality much more. Ash has more pronounced highs and lows while alder has a more "rounded" sound.

I'd like to add to the discussion the fact that there are a lot of nice guitars made of mahogany and korina - i.e. Edge's Explorer and his LPs. Mahogany is the most liked wood for LP and SG style guitars. Agathis is said to be a cheaper kind of mahogany.

For rock and metal music a basswood guitar can be useful because of it's pronounced mids. I tend to believe there has to be a quality difference between the basswood used in a 99USD Squier and the basswood used in a 1000USD Ibanez. It's most likely also a matter of selection.

Here is a Fender Custom Shop "Rory Gallagher" Strat. $4000.00 USD ! Yikes. But pretty cool none the less.

    Yikes!

Especially if you consider that Rory originally bought his beloved strat cheap and used somewhere in a pawn shop or on a street market. The sixth tuner was changed to Schaller because the original part was broken, and he replaced it with what he had at hand.

  3. Well, that Guardian vid. that Jeff posted has led me to the current conclusions;

    - Edge uses one of his beloved LPs on Breathe
    - I'll Go Crazy... is delayed up in true Edge-y fashion but we didn't get any suggestive shots regarding what he was using
    - Adam's unleashing some new basses on us?

I don't necessarily agree on the idea that this is the Edge era of the Tele., I just think he's seen to use them more lol. ZooTV and PopMart were definitely the Les Paul era (plus occasional appearances of Ricks.) whilst JT was the Black Strat. era, but post-2000 I don't think he's really been turning to one sort of guitar before any other - I'm more of the opinion that he's just becoming a bit of a guitar-whore lol and just experimenting like hell

EDIT - in the first Guardian vid., I'm wondering if the big jam they have with Edge on the tobacco Tele. might be the predecessor to Fez/Being Born...

EDIT (2) - I swear Edge was about to break out into Sweet Child'O Mine at the end of the "Edge Back" vid. lol!
  4. I just come back from a birthday party. I was asked yesterday if I'd like to bring my guitar and join in a version of "Born to be Wild". The party was held in one of our network churches, and they have a fully equipped stage with PA, monitors, lights, drumkit and keyboard there. I brought my Squier Deluxe Strat, my Behringer AC112 and my Ibanez Fat Cat pedal. We decided I should do vocals, too. The pastor played keys, another friend played drums, but the bass player didn't come... well, however, it was great fun. During the second chorus another friend drove his motorcycle into the hall, and the woman whose birthday it was jumped on the backseat and had herself driven twice through the room while we kept rocking. I love our church network.

Wait, was this all actually inside the church?

    Awesome, nonetheless.
  7. A biker church? Does Dennis Hopper go there?

I am not saying the Tele is the only guitar but it is showing up more and more in shows and recordings...

    ... more proof?

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/video/2009/feb/15/u2-no-line-horizon

Near the end of the video, you see Edge playing the 1996 white Fender 40th Anniversary Telecaster and then hand it off to Dallas. (that take possibly on the album) - about 2:26 into the video.

And remember that the same guitar, while not used for "Walk On" on stage, did appear in the video for that song.

So I stick with my initial 'theory' that the Telecaster has become a guitar of favor for the 2000's

Ah yeah I didn't mean that you say it's the only guitar lol and I know where you're coming from, but I wonder whether it's just a similar to what I had when we saw a couple of screenshots from Rolling Stone and the vid. for "I Believe In Father Christmas" in that maybe he was getting all Rickenbacker on us, but the thing is we can't be sure because we haven't seen all 2-3 years of production and rehearsals - for all we know, he could be turning to...*thinks*...something like the Casino first and foremost, or primarily sticking with something like the Explorer for recording material. We just can't be certain lol

  10. Yes, it was in the church. But it's a rented room, not an ancient church building. This is a pic from a service last year:
