1. To review this album so soon would be a mistake. It takes time to appreciate it. All of the albums are good when you first get them. Its U2, and we love even the crap songs.
The way to Judge this album is in two years how many songs from this album would make a mix cd in your car.
My cd run heavy A.B. J.T. and 2-3 songs of the others,
But as it stands this one has about 5 that I will listen to for years to come.

I don't think it's a mistake somewhat, but it makes things interesting to see peoples first impressions, then come back and revisit those after time, i mean, all those reviews and we have had a truck load over the past month or so, are just from journo's one listen when they had to forfit their phones & recording devises etc, and most have been pretty much what i thought after listening to it myself, not if they liked particular songs or not, but just the feel of the album etc.

I remember writing a review similar this after a few listens only with Atomic Bomb [unfortunatly that site is gone so i can't go back & copy & paste], and my thoughts are very much the same today after 5 years, the same excitement isn't there of a new record, but my thoughts on the songs & the album as a whole are pretty much the same..

  7. Listened through it again through earphones last night in bed, and found out that there's so much to be discovered about this album. So many great sounds, it all blends perfect into each other. What an album, though some songs still have to grow a lot.
  8. The one dissapointment on this album is Moment Of Surrender. It isn't wat close to One or Bad from earlier albums. It is more a Crumbs From Your Table.
It doens't sound anthemic, classic or whatever makes you warm or cold. It sounds as if the band tried real hard to compose a classic but didn't succeed, it is too long and a bit boring. Perhaps it could have been better or even perhaps it was better in an earlier stage but overproduced now, I don't know.
However, all (!) the other songs have something defined U2-ish in them, lots of 'oo-oo-oohh' sounding choruses, chiming guitars. You can definitly hear Brian Eno's influence in all the song (incl. MoS) and that was missing on HTDAAB.

Besides, finally we have another U2-album with a title song, and the coincidence is that it matches perfectly with the sound and mostly the atmosphere on earlier albums with a title song, i.e. October, Unforgettable Fire and Zooropa.

I see this album really as The Unforgettable Fire of the 2000's and expect that it will be rated as such in the end.
  9. Did noone mention the word overproduced yet?

  10. I didn't see it yet, I did see the line 'if they went a little longer with it, it would've been better' though. Is overproduced a word that comes in your mind?

Yep, especially through headphones I sometimes have the impression that Eno just used a smoothing iron. a beep here a blup there, double-vocals everywhere...
  12. Sidenote: They're playing half of the number of album songs on Dutch radio now, doesn't matter now anymore I guess haha.
