  2. I believe I read somewhere that ACC audio is higher quality than MP3, so I didn't want to degrade the already poor quality any further.

    I see it like converting measurements. For example, converting 12 inches to 30.48 cm. Although the number appears blown up, it is equal to the same measurement.

    It is not. Lossy->lossy transcoding is 'forbidden'. Even while transcoding from 128kbps to 320kbps AAC you will loose quality.

    Best quality possible in this case is the 128kbps audio stream directly (not encoded just copied) from the source
