1. Just wondering how people in here rank this album with all of U2's other albums?
  2. well its just to early to do something like that, but for the first hearing and because i love The Unforgettable Fire, i really think this one stands right in the second best album they done IMO, even above Achtung and Joshua, but again thats just my opinion.

I guess you're right. It might be too early to tell. But hopefully this thread will run for a while so people can respond over time. I'm not here to argue with peoples opinion here.
  4. Indeed far too early. We'll see in a year of 5.
  5. I'll go down right now and call it one of the best.

Although i feel that only half the story has been told, until songs of ascent.

    yep
  7. It's a great album, without weak points, with great and very diverse songs. Sonically very well produced, and very well played overall. The sum is greater than the parts. Probably contains some of the best U2 songs ever, or at least so it has seemed to me so far. Only AB and JB fit with this description, so I'd say now it's up there.

This album is in some respect a sort of Summa of what U2 have been so far:

Magnificent, Moment of Surrender - Joshua Tree-esque,
    NLOTH - Pop-esque,
    the 3 in the middle - 00's-esque,
    Being Born - Unforgettable Fire-esque,
    Breathe - U2-esque...

But it is also, at the same time, something completely new (see Unknown Caller, White as Snow, Cedars of Lebanon; and of course all the other songs: they only vaguely remind of JT, Pop, TUF etc.). Perhaps for this reason, it is a very complete, and rich album.

This said, JT and AB are what made U2 U2 - that's the real thing. Yet, this is very real too. For me, it really is up there. If I had to choose the one album for the one desert island... I guess I'd pick the 3 of them
  8. Too early. But still the best they've ever done.
  9. Could be their best studio album. JT/Zooropa/AB/ATYCLB were awesome live, NLOTH will have to prove it the upcoming tour.
  10. NLOTH won't top JT's or AB's extraordinary status, but I think it's close behind.

Don't call too early. I remember how HTDAAB was hailed. A lot of people even said: "Their first album was called Boy, this one should have been called Man". Four years later we discuss if it's even a good album at all. Quite some change in reception.
