1. Hello. I have a question about 2 of the New Mixes on The Best of 1990 - 2000. I Know Gone and Discotheque are very different because Gone was re-recorded and Discotheque was mixed to make it sound more Popmartish but Numb sounds exactly the same to me and so does Staring At The Sun from what i hear in the I-Tunes preview clips. Could someone tell me if there is any newly recorded bits in Numb and Staring At The Sun if you have heard the New Mixes all the way through.
    Thanks.
  2. The new mix of Staring At The Sun has a sort of hiphop-ish beat in the beginning and Bono's 'oh-oh-oh-ooooohs' at the end sound quite different.

I'm not completely sure about Numb, but I believe I once read somewhere here that it has a lot more of Bono's high falsetto in the background.

Yeah, the 'New Mix', as it's called on the first disc has more Bono falsettos. I actually like it a lot.

The second disc has one called 'Gimme More Some Dignity Mix', with a woman singing at the beginning and a small intro by some guy leaving a phone message as request to another guy, 'Rob', to call him about the new U2 mix for Numb, and is set over a more mid-90s dance-beat with simple electronic sounds added in. Not a great mix, but much different to the Zoroopa edit.
  4. I don't like the new mixes... the songs are better on album. Single versions of Please and Last Night are better, than album, but these new mixes are useless...

I don't think there that useless. I agree the songs are better on the album but the new versions of Gone and Discotheque sound good to me. I agree they are better on the albums but the mixes are worth having in my opinion.

    I agree
Gone sounds way more modern than the album version, it sounds more like pure rock. And Disotheque is a completely new song thanks to the new mix. The SATS and Numb remixes are pretty forgettable, but they're nice extras
  7. they should have left the "Boom Cha!" bit in Discotheque, coz if memory serves they took it out for the new mix.
  8. ^ I lol'd at that.

but seriously, the new mix with added "Boom Cha!" would be the definitive version IMO.

  9. I agree. I think the intro sounds like the one they used for Discotheque on the Popmart Tour.

  10. I can easily live without the "Boom Cha!" Prefer Mike Hedges "new mixes" of "Discotheque" and "Gone" a lot to the POP versions.

On the end of the "new mix" of SATS the music slowly fades behind Bonos "Ooohs", leaving him singing a- capella for the last seconds of the song. Prefer the new mix, too.

The original mix of "Numb" had the "I feel numb"- choruses sung alone by Bono's falsetto. On the "new mix" there's an additional, much lower voice placed over it, degrading the falsetto to BGVs. Prefer the original mix.

  11. I prefer the new numb mix.
Staring at the Sun is much worse, there's more slow drum parts.
    Discotheque is interesting, possibly better.
    Gone is around the same.
