  1. Hey everyone. In the past, critics categorized most of U2's biggest hits as "anthemic."

    Many people use the word "anthemic" without offering a clear-cut definition of the term.

    What does it mean when a song is described as "anthemic"? What sound qualities and textures must exist in a song in order for it to be defined as "anthemic"?

    And while we're on the subject-

    What other non-U2 rock songs can be classified as "anthemic"? Do Coldplay's songs qualify as being that?

  2. Creating landscapes is something like that, and that's what U2 is doing. That's what makes it so...special. Creating places with their sound.

    The Verve
    Muse
    Blur
    David Bowie
    are other anthemic artists IMO
  8. I think they mean anthemic in that it really gets you excited/pumped, like stadium rock, but much more personal
    I could be dead wrong too

    And some of Coldplay's stuff is, eg. Fix You, VLV.

    Anthemic songs are ones with qualities such as 'a serious tone and strong tune'


  10. If we're talking about bringing you to a certain place then Radiohead is probably the most anthemic artist out there But I'm not sure about the term?

    Thom Yorke's singing is rather undecipherable, and they are really too left field to be anthemic.

    A perfect example of an anthemic song is Streets or WOWY

    Have to agree there, I love Radiohead, but anthemic they are not
    Some Coldplay is, but not all. Muse I think are
