I thought I read somewhere that Michael Jackson set a record with his new tour

He did, but U2 broke that record already
That was posted November 30th 2008 - last year.
Fresh rumors came up in mid-late January this year that 3 dates are scheduled for 24th Sep Brisbane, 26th Sep Sydney & 29th Sep Melbourne 2009.

Mmmmm, all 50 shows for one place is what it was, I thought.
Anyway - 650000 tickets sold in total at 112 per minute? That's brilliant - more than any other U2 tour so far, isn't it? I guess that quote I read earlier "It's not decided on record sales anymore, rather by concerts and live shows" is definitely true.
I saw a lot on U2.com had all sold out. What a result. And the openers are better than last tour.

Even the three UK gigs not sold out have only the seats in the Gods 'behind' the stage left. They'll go soon.
"Fogel said the 2009 portion of U2's tour will wrap up at the end of October before resuming in the summer/fall of 2010 in Europe and North America again, and hopefully South America."
