  3. My guess is that Mother (under the Pop-era) is an early version of Mofo too
And Wanderlust (under Zooropa-era) sounds like an early version of The Wanderer (OR they gave this song to their good friends of REM).
    I think

Mother was an early version of Mofo along with Odeupussy, MMFR, MMFR, Mothership etc, and whatever other 25 name changes it went through.

Wanderlust is an early version of The Wanderer - which may be the one with Bono on vocals instead of Johnny Cash.
  5. "Squidgy" is listed under Pop, but wasn't that one of the songs they came up with during Zooropa? I remember a few pages about that one in Bill Flanagan's U2 at the end of the World book . . .

Squidgy was part of the Macphisto speech too

  8. Squidgy was Princess Diana's dog or something....is what I read.

  9. Squidgygate refers to the pre-1990 telephone conversations between Diana, Princess of Wales and a close friend, James Gilbey, and to the controversy surrounding how those conversations were recorded. During the calls, Gilbey affectionately called Diana by the names "Squidgy" and "Squidge". In the conversation, the Princess of Wales likens her situation to that of a character in the popular British soap opera EastEnders, and expresses concern that she might be pregnant.

Oh...so not a dog, then. Great speech, though.

It could be the original version:

Bono keeps reading: "Now it's time for me to go, to confer, converse, and otherwise hobnob with my fellow celebrities. But I leave these three —the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Edge—to rule in my place until such time as I return."

No, Bono, says, the reference to the other three has to go. It makes Macphisto too literally a part of U2. Bono's foot is swollen, bandaged, and wrapped in ice and towels. He fell and twisted it last night at the end of "Bullet the Blue Sky," reaggravating a sprain from an earlier show. He ignores the discomfort and plows ahead with his speech.

"America! I gave you Bill Clinton! Watch him!

"Frank Sinatra! I gave you MTV!

"Salman Rushdie! Is the price on your head too much to pay for so much airtime?

"People of Europe! When I found you, you were divided by culture, language, and history—as different as the channels on a dial. Now you are joined together on the same cable. You will never be separated again!

"People of Sarajevo—look on the bright side. There are those all over the world with food, heat, and security who never get to be on television like you are!

"Good-bye, Squidgy—I hope they give you Wales!

"Good-bye, all you neo-Nazis—I hope they give you Auschwitz!

    "Good-bye, Michael—I hope you get your new penis. . . ."

Bono stops reading and looks at McGuinness, who is laughing and telling him to do it, go all the way. The papers have been full of wild speculation that Michael Jackson may be having his male member surgically altered to confound a description of its eccentricities given by the boy he allegedly molested. Talk about tampering with evidence! Willie Williams returns asking for a final copy of the speech to put on the video monitors. After a few more edits and revisions Bono hands over the text.

Most nerves are on edge tonight. There are photocopied notices stuck up all over the backstage, reading:

    412

TO: ALL WHO SOMETIMES WATCH THE SHOW FROM INSIDE THE BARRICADE AND OTHER PLACES YOU SHOULDN'T BE.

BECAUSE THESE SHOWS ARE BEING RECORDED AND BROADCAST, PLEASE DO NOT GO INSIDE THE BARRICADE AREA TONIGHT OR TOMORROW NIGHT. IF YOU ARE THERE, YOU WILL BE IN THE WAY AND ALSO IN CAMERA SHOT.

UNDERWORLD IS ALSO GOING TO BE A HIGH STRESS AREA. PLEASE KEEP AWAY FROM ALL UNDERGROUND WORK AREAS.

ALSO, PLEASE DO NOT USE CELLULAR PHONES OR YOUR WALKIE-TALKIES AROUND THE STAGE.

Out at the mixing board Joe O'Herlihy is struggling to compensate for a strong wind that is blowing away the balance he spent the afternoon achieving. The soundman looks up with sad resignation and says, "I work so hard to get the sound right...''
  11. I've been listening to Take You Down over and over again since I downloaded Achtung Baby outtakes. Such a great tune it is.

I found it a bit mellow and boring. Sunset In Colours is way better.
