1. I sitll like that during ZOOROPA there was a title mentioned called "Sparky Leaves The Planet" (or something close to that).

Wondering if that mutated into some slinky bass groove song like "Somedays are Better Than Others" or if it never got finished.

  2. Itdoes. Some titles from the Pop Sessions had weird names. Also I have had something that has been in my mind. Did I Will Follow have a working title and also when was it written? Does anybody know?

There's an early demo, written sometime in 1978 - 1979 with the title 'Walk Away', which could well be it.

mookymookins, I've added your titles (or what I didn't have) to the list.

OK Thanks. I've been wondering about the early history of I Will Follow for a while!

Well i have the words and they are completly different from The Dream Is Over but the words to the first verse of The King's New Clothes sound like they could rhyme with it.

    The Dream Is Over
    Today, while on my way
I met a man in gray
    Yesterday

    Told a story, oh
    I've a ring of gold
    He was told
    (From U2Wanderer.org)

    The Kings New Clothes
Yell so the book is gone
    Well time goes on
    Well, will we resign

Well, well the book is on
    Well time can run
    When will we sign
    (from u2gigs.com)

    I know i'm not exactly anstratdubh1979 but i thought i would help

I was remembering more of the similarities in the music rather than the lyrics, but thanks. I swear I remember reading it somewhere, but I can't remember where now...ah well, it'll come to me hopefully.
  7. Wow, this is a great topic!

I suggest we add to the main list a bit more info, like what became of each song and the source for the demo name. I think it's also important to identify which song names were given by the band and which were named by the fans (usually based on a lyric in the song e.g.: "Take You Down"):

    Here's an example:

    The Joshua Tree

    July 1986-November 1986

America (RELEASED on the Joshua Tree 2007 edition as "Drunk Chicken/America")
Rise Up (RELEASED on the Joshua Tree 2007 edition)
Diamond/Diamond Store (fan-given title - source: .wav demo snippet leaked on the net)
    Move Up
    Dance
Present Tense (fan-given title - source: .wav demo snippet leaked on the net)
Tell Them The Story (fan-given title - source: .wav demo snippet leaked on the net)
Beautiful Ghost (RELEASED on the Complete U2 Box Set as "Beautiful Ghost/Introduction to Songs of Experience")
Wave of Sorrow (RELEASED on the Joshua Tree 2007 edition)
Desert Of Our Love (RELEASED on the Joshua Tree 2007 edition)
    The Executioner's Song
Under The Weather Girls (source: The Making of The Joshua Tree documentary)

I'll try to do the same to the entire list later.
  8. There's over 200, so it's a huge undertaking...and you need reputable sources too - I've forgotten about where I found most of them.

And welcome to the site as well!
  9. Here's a quick attempt at a more comprehensive list:

    http://www.sendspace.com/file/vce3y0

Sorry to just barge in, the subject got me very excited I've been trying to compile a list like that for a long time...

BTW, where do all those ATYCLB song titles come from?

  10. No worries about barging in. Everyone's welcome to contribute.

All those ATYCLB titles - Propaganda, people from this thread, Interference, U2.com, U2byU2, general knowledge...
  11. I've added more titles from the ASCAP and BMI catalogues and the recording dates as well - some of those titles which I'd never heard of.

A lot of them in those databases you need to double-check as they were written by Bono or Edge - there aren't any songs written purely by Larry or Adam - may have been passed on to other artists, for example 'Enter The Dru' which was passed on to Dru Hill for a 2002 song or a lot of the Captive songs which Edge participated in. But it's getting bigger and bigger.

Also so the newbies can see this list and wonder what became of each song. There are at least five new songs on the BMI database which weren't there, which means they're being recorded and used, or at least somebody - is submitting them and might be used for some future project or B-side. Oddly, no mention of Kingdom, possibly because it's not U2's song or hasn't been listed yet for general release. Check it out and if anyone knows any more, feel free to add them.

Still, it's the biggest database of U2 outtakes around.

  12. And still it's a mixture of demos, live tracks, outtakes and working titles.
