1. Madonna's not a rockstar, no... that's why I used quotation marks in my previous post
You're right about what you said: they had to work hard and yes, Bono has to keep the lyrics intersting....which he most definitely does, BTW. His lyrics cover almost every aspect of human emotion and that's what makes them strong.

Sometimes i's in one simple sentence, for instance when he sings to Jesus on Wake Up Dead Man: "Will you put in a good word for me" .....Wow!
  2. Just for the fun of it, let's play the devil's advocate here.

Taste may vary, but it's BS to say they're overrated or limited musicians.
U2 never never made a record twice; they always go for new sounds and whether they use rock, blues, folk, dance, trance, industry or whatever influences...it ALWAYS sounds like U2.
Everyone recognizes a U2-track the second it's on the radio. No matter what era it's from.
Why did they earn 22 Grammy's, or sold over a 100 million albums? Because they're overrated? Don't think so.

To be honest, U2 may be around for 30 years, but they were relevant for a much shorter time. No one knew U2 before Live Aid, they became big with JT, stayed big till the R&H disaster, came back in 91, then there was the Pop fail and came back once more in 2000. So all in all, they were relevant for about 5 years.

No, they never made a record twice. they do them in triplets. It ALWAYS sounds like U2 because they "ALWAYS" use the same sounds. Changing a little detail here and there, add a keyboard here, a bell there - a new Edge sound effect (God bless delay) and *boomcha* we have a new sound. Compare the revolutionary Mofo to I will follow once you've stripped it down...
As for the Grammys - who takes them seriously anyway? They are corrupted shit. Of course you'll win 22 Grammys if you're playing every charity thing south of the north pole, have your head as deep in the ass of any western politician as Bono has, support the conservative music industry as Paul Mc$ does.
The Backstreet Boys also sold over 100 million albums. Does that make them as "big" as U2?

Larry Mullen? The best drummer I know....listen to his drumming on Streets.....

Speaking of an overrated "rock" star; then I'd choose Madonna.

Edge being one of the best guitar players around? Ever heard of Mark Knopler, Eric Clapton, Eddie van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page, Jack White, Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, Angus Young, the list goes on and on...?

Larry Mullen takes # 75 in the Top 100 drummers...

Speaking on overrated rockstars, then I'd choose Coldplay (Guess I ruined it with this one)

  3. All I'd say is if U2 have sold 150 million albums world wide, they must be doing something right... oh and like NLOTH was No.1 in every countries charts except 3, pretty impressive.

    You like u2, right?

  5. Sarcasm -
    sar·casm

    Noun; definition:
Cutting language: remarks that mean the opposite of what they seem to say and are intended to mock or deride.

The guitar players you mention are ALL solo players, that was exactly what I was NOT talking about.

Larry Mullen on position 75? That makes only 74 in the entire wold better than him.
As far as your remark on Coldplay concerns, I agree.

For the rest, I rest my case your honor.

In this case the Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls must have been doing something right, too.

Once again we mix up record sales and quality.

    Alex

  8. Agreed, but with the remark that U2 has been a steady institution for 30 years. You can't say that of the Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys....

  9. It doesn't matter how good or big you are there will always be more people that hate you than like you.
  10. That could be, but I also think that the more popular you are and the more spotlight you get, the more criticism there is. Bono has always been critisized about his charity work ("a rockstar that wants to heal the world for hsi own ego" and stuff like that).
If he wouldn't have done anything, then there would probably a lot more people who would ask themselves why he -with a bank account as big as a sky scraper- wouldn't want to share his wealth with others.

If you're not a U2-fan then I can understand that you're annoyed about the exposure the band gets.

For the rest: maybe statistics are only numbers, but they do tell us something.
