    It's not that easy to listen to it. NLOTH is a grower, it's not as catchy as HTDAAB.
  2. Well I think the singles charts these days are a bloody joke anyway. The album charts are far more representative of an artist's popularity, I believe. The last 12 months or so have seen UK number ones for respected artists like U2, Radiohead, Oasis, Keane, KOL (obviously), The Script, Bruce Springsteen, Prodigy, R.E.M., Last Shadow Puppets, Paul Weller, The Verve, Coldplay, The Killers, the list goes on and on. But only two of those could get a number one single off the album. Perhaps NLOTH should have been a "no singles" album, like Zooropa was initially (I don't count Numb because that was a video single and wasn't eligible for the charts). I say that because there's pride at stake here. U2 shouldn't be struggling to hit the top ten with a lead-off single, it's embarrassing. I do have higher hopes for "Magnificent".

    Oh, the tunes are brilliant, don't get me wrong. But not singles. Good singles are catchy and easy, these songs are mediocore as singles, not as songs. As songs they're fantastic.

    @ Ryan: No-one nowadays sits down for 5 minutes to listen to music. It has to be quick and fast.

    You summed it up for me, and thats even with Boots being on some music awards shows
    I doubt the will do a heavy promotion for "Magnificent"
    Even if they do, I dont think its enough to give them no. 1
    Sadly to say because I really like that song
    It seems a bit messy here and their with release dates etc.

    Or are we talking about how the digital single is charting?

    I really hope it does better than Boots. I don't think it'll be anywhere near as successful as Vertigo though, apart from the pimping intro (which they cut out for the single) it is very much an TUF era sounding u2 song, and I'm not sure how modern audiences will react to that.

    I haven't seen it anywhere yet in either Adelaide or Brisbane. I think this is digital charting for the moment.
  12. I agree that U2 should perhaps stop releasing singles from NLOTH.
    As I have mentioned in a previous post, the album sounds like a natural continuation of the passengers side project (imo) rather than a U2 album.
    Magnificent is a fine song, but I dont seeing it doing anything to raise the albums profile.
    I have to admit that I was taken in by the hype leading up to the albums release, and having been a U2 fan for 26 years I was expecting the band to take it to the next level.
    hmmmmm.
    I heard boots and initiallly though that it was a pretty good lead single, the lyrics are shite! but the serpentine rhythm means that you cannot help tapping your foot to it, so I had high hopes for the rest of the tunes.
    But, the songs just dont sound sincere or relevant enough for the times.
    U2 have always been leaders, not followers. so why should they sound like a number of other bands who are around at the moment?.
    Multiple studios/collaborators, over produced (maybe). Isn't this detracting from what made u2 great in the first place, the ability for 4 guys to spend 6-12 months in a room and create magic that would be remembered and influence generations of musicians?.
    There are many factors to take into account when measuring the success of an album and the legacy that it will leave, but being number 1 in 30 or so countries does not ensure continued popularity.
