  1. I doubt very much they would change anything... They knew the album wouldn't have sounded the way it did if they had "finished" it, and I'm sure they want to keep it as it is now so they have something to look back at. Pop lost U2 a lot of fans (only to come back later) so I doubt they'd do anything to try and make it resurface.


  2. "Wake Up Dead Man" was not written in 1996-1997 during the POP sessions.

    "Wake Up Dead Man", like "If God Will Send His Angels" were written during the time of the Zooropa sessions; around the same time that "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me".

    By all accounts, the songs when through various arrangements. So the Zooropa era versions were probably quite different from the released versions on POP.

    (And the released version of HMKMKMTM version probably being different in 1993 then it ended up in 1995)

    So U2 re-releasing POP in 2009? doubtful.

    With a supposed 2nd album of new material to come out in the next 12 mos. and talk of remasters for The Unforgettable Fire and Achtung Baby... Chances for a re-mastered or re-made POP probably won't happen any time soon.

  3. In addition to the above post, Wake Up Dead Man had a more so-called 'grunge' sound. There's some demos there, like Nosejob, Sparky's Left The Planet...etc...but how do we know whether they are just riffs, full songs or even plain a capella tracks? That said, Hymn To The Universe / Hymn To Mr Universe, will probably end up on there as it was the better song out of that and The Playboy Mansion. Supercity Mania is supposedly identical to Miami (possible to be a single version), so that might get on there.

    Pop won't come out until late 2010 / 2011. But what we got was U2's best effort since The Unforgettable Fire (for me, anyway), so don't be too worried. Of course if you want an alternate Pop album, use a few single releases (Please), Big Girls Are Best and Levitate and Holy Joe, and you should have a great little record, still!

    So if I was gonna change it in any way, I would have the 'leaked' version of Discotheque (in higher quality, if possible), the other version of Last Night On Earth and the single version of Please. An extra track (like a bonus or hidden one) would be either Levitate or Big Girls Are Best - I don't like Holy Joe enough for it to get a proper general release. The rest would be left as is. If I had heard any of the sessions or demos, I'd tell you what a second disc could contain. As I haven't heard those, I can't tell you.

    Sounds good to me. I think I'd be hanging out for the third disc, as opposed to the second disc. The great thing about Pop is that for a more electronic, digital recording, it has a fantastic sound right through. It hasn't been put through some horrible mastering system. I'd go as far as to say it is the best sounding U2 recording since The Unforgettable Fire and Zooropa. They can release something like ReclinerMan's suggestion.

    I'd get it in a heartbeat; and the reason I didn't get the Boy / October / War double CD remasters. Not enough thought was put into them - let's release some old (read: boring) B-sides and demos with a liner note. That's not good enough. It needs to be truly exciting and worth my money and time to bother with. If U2 want to finally give Pop the so-called justice it deserves to silence the critics (not like it needs it), this is what they need to do, and do it bloody well.

    Theri Boy is well done and should not remake it.

    Remaking neither would be ideal for me.


    A random question, but does anyone know if there's any original version of Holy Joe aside from the one live performance and the Garage and Guilty mixes?
  6. On YouTube, I have found a number of videos where people have edited Edge's backing vocals into the studio version of Gone. I would love to have one of them. If anybody has something like this, would you let me know (I'm not breaking rules this way)? Thank you!

    the new mix on the best of has those backing vocals. You mean after " Im not coming down" right?


  8. Yes, I do. But these mixes are better, the are more dominant than the Mike Hedge's Mix. Plus, the Mike Hedge's Mix does not have them in the first chorus.

    I'm trying to mix it in myself, but it just sucks so much. I'm considering recording myself singing the backing vocal, without any instruments, then mixing that in. I'm thinking the scream with a "telephone" effect, with a falsetto over it. Obviously, I'll record the scream and falsetto six different times, that way it sounds a bit more believable. Or I could have my freind Curtis (who sings) help me out. That is really what I should do, but he isn't exactly the biggest U2 fan. I can't sing that well, so this should be fun. This is where my "love for singing" comes in as a problem. If something comes from this, I'll let you guys know.

    I've just looked at all the Pop tracks in Audacity and see exactly what you mean. The only track that doesn't get clipped is Staring At The Sun, and even that sails pretty close to the wind. I hated Gone when I first heard it, but the Mike Hedges Mix, whilst still on the limit, is a lot cleaner and one of my favourite U2 tracks.

    I'm surprised that I didn't pick up clipping in it after all these years. Looking at a WAV file reveals the complete opposite to my thoughts. It's impossible to mix it properly in anything I've got, to tune down the vocals or the music. Audition won't work with it and neither will Audacity.

    Maybe further experimentation...
