Time to stop "releasing" singles off this album, I think.

Yes I too thought that 42 is a complete joke.....in fact I thought number 12 was poor for GOYB.....I think this is a classic....but to be honest I complained when Beautiful Day was over-played and kind of ruined the song for me after a while......maybe this album is for the fans only.....and maybe because of this we, the true fans, will love this album for longer...

  2. man ur a negative person!!! weak song???? pfft...

    great choice!!!

  3. Second worst on the album. Over produced, cheesy lyrics......usually makesva good single but it's chart position says otherwise.
  4. In my opinion the single version is fucked up. Album version is way better. A very bad single.
  5. I don't mind the video, i like the effect of the white sheets over buildings, gives the video a sense of purity, probably the message they were trying to put out with having it shot in Fez..

No brainer as the second single, EASILY best track and most commercial song from the record, most people say it reminds them of vintage U2.

  6. Nah I agree with Gerard (apart from his thinking it to be the 2nd worst song from NLOTH, I rate Magnificent), the songs just aren't made to be successful representatives of the album or commercial adverts for the band's music. The only one which stands out to me as the most singleworthy of songs is Breathe (maybe NLOTH too - GOYB should have been but it's a weird song and not what the general public would associate with U2 and partly why I think it didn't do very well), but I don't think it would actually do very well either because it's too much of a good song. It's one with too much going on that takes you in and makes you think. Vertigo succeeded as a lead single because it was a catchy riff based around guitar, drums and bass, and thus it wasn't one which needed a lot of attention or effort to accept as a song. With something like Magnificent and/or Breathe, there's a lot more thinking that comes as part of the package of the song, and for NLOTH in general as an album, it doesn't strike me as a commercial album and thus after the first few listens, I didn't get the feeling it was going to be an album along the same magnitude of HTDAAB where commercial success is concerned.

    Couldn't care less though

I gulped when I saw it wasn't in the Top 40.

Makes Two Number 1's and a number 3 from HTDAAB seem a lifetime ago. U2 are clearly no longer a relevant force in the UK singles market and should, I agree, stop releasing singles. Give us digital EP's of the stuff that might have been B-sides for sure.

Not that this bothers me by the way. I just think it's a reflection of the singles chart full-stop. And I agree with Harry, as usual.
  9. This tour must be gonna make these guys absolute millions for them not to give a crap about the single and album sales. The marketing effort so far has been non-existent. All the eggs are in the big tour basket.

  10. Do you think Songs of Ascent (or other songs from the sessions) will be released digitally only, like Unreleased and Rare and this new Magnificent EP?

Each physical single as they were released, to boost sales, marketing etc could have had a digital companion EP, like this:

    Get On Your Boots
Get On Your Boots (Single Edit)
No Line On The Horizon 2
    Breathe (Live)
    Magnificent (Live)
    New Song 1

    Magnificent
    Magnificent (Single Edit)
    New Song 1
    New Song 2
    New Song 3
    Winter
    Magnificent (Remix)

And so on...rather than releasing a whole new album, eight or so new tracks (three plus one more) would have been released digitally, and introduce them over the course of the tour. It could have been like the 7 EP, Wide Awake In America EP and all those and made a fantastic album even better with awesome B-sides. The reason Coldplay (yes, I know) did so well is because they put out a great classic, yet modern first song from a top album and followed that up quickly with an EP.

Management have failed worse than dismally. U2 have done their part, getting out there and playing to the world, but they've made mistakes in the whole campaign - their choice of Boots as first single is one big cock-up. Then again, it could be the record company choosing what's convenient (and so-called-radio-hits) to release. I wouldn't have bought the album if it wasn't U2, but it was their best work since 1997 and therefore it appealed to me.

Magnificent wouldn't have been my choice for any single. Then again, the album isn't radio-friendly and catering to the public like Bomb or ATYCLB did. It makes you think and go somewhere else for 55 minutes - Being Born, Unknown Caller, Moment of Surrender, White As Snow, Cedars of Lebanon just aren't the kind of stuff people are used to hearing U2 put out after the last two records. The three songs in the middle (Crazy Tonight > Get On Your Boots > Stand Up Comedy) just break the flow of a slow burner.

I just hope Songs of Ascent does something to get people interested.

They knew the album would go to number one, because of who they are. But it's in bargain bins now, along with Chinese Democracy and the singles are nowhere to be found. They know the tour is gonna make them close to what Vertigo did, if not more. That's why they came up with a huge stage, because people want to see it.

How many ads did I see for the album when it was being released? Zero.

How many posters were around in stores where I was to promote the album and single? None.

How many people (even at the big record stores) knew about the album being released? Nada.

Bomb got great promotion because of the iPod and the Vertigo video (which was a great video) and all the little free promo shows across the US and the UK. Dunno what ATYCLB got to promote it so well. Even Pop fared better and so did Zooropa. Passengers had more advertising back in 1995!!!
  11. I did see a TV advert for the album a couple of times. On cable TV.
