    The last album that I purchased is Mysterious Ways Single, which I found in the Salvation Army for $1

  11. The Living End - White Noise - a little too mixed, but great songs and great live band.

    Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero - like Chinese Democracy in parts, can only be a good thing.

    AC/DC - Plug Me In - well, it's a DVD set, but hell, it makes a nice audio rip.




    No Guns N Roses this time around, but the new Green Day one sounds interesting...And keep an eye out, No Line (just the regular 11-track CD) is now in bargain bins. For cheap!!! As is the last Bruce Springsteen one too - but it doesn't look that interesting.
  12. Kerry Livgren (ex- Kansas / ex- ProtoKaw):

    - Decade Vol.1 (2009) - a brand new re- recording of "Seeds of Change" (1979), keeping only most original guest performances
    - Reconstructions Reconstructed (1997 / 2006) - a reworking of "Reconstructions" (1986), partially rerecorded, including three bonus tracks
    - The Best of (2002) - including a lot of unreleased, rare and rerecorded stuff

    Livgren has acquired a habit of redoing albums after a while, this ususally resulting in noticeable improvements. He's done so successfully before with "Collector's Sedition" (2000) - "Collector's Sedition Director's Cut" (2007) and "Prime Mover" (1988) - "Prime Mover 2" (1998) - "Prime Mover Redux" (2008). He's also done some minor changes to "TimeLine" (1983) on "Decade Vol.2" (2008), but I expect that one to be completely reworked some day, too. Well, he's got his own professional recording studio, so he can use it any time he wants to.

    "Reconstructions" was originally recorded on a budget in the middle of the eighties and still sounds a little bit dated, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to beginners. "Seeds of Change" on the other hand was produced in the seventies with big company money in it, so the original album stands the test of time quite well. My guess is that Livgren rerecorded it more for legal / copyright reasons than for sonic reasons. The result is quite convincing, very similar to the original while smoothly updating the sound - but not too much. Livgren kept the original lead vocal tracks (Steve Walsh, Ronnie Dio, David Pack, Jeff Pollard, Davey Moire, Mylon LeFevre), enhanced the sound of the original drum tracks (Barriemore Barlow, Phil Ehart), kept the violin (Robbie Steinhardt) and a few other guest performances but rerecorded all his guitars, keyboards and a lot of backing vocals. So it's really a mixture between old and new recording... well worth a listen but no real substitute for the original. On "The Best of" are two songs from the same album in entirely new versions. Here the drums and vocals were rerecorded, too. I have to say that the completely rerecorded "Best of" version of the epic "Ground Zero" with Kerry's nephew Jake Livgren on lead vocals sounds a lot better to me than the partly rerecorded "Decade" version with David Pack's original vocal track.

    I recommend "The Best of", "Collector's Sedition Director's Cut" and "Prime Mover Redux" for beginners. "Seeds of Change" is a classic but sounds much more like vintage Kansas than his later stuff.

    Livgren's habit of redoing his own stuff might be one of the reasons that keep me hoping for a revisited POP by U2.
