  3. SPOILERS first night in Paris : my concert review SPOILERS

Hello ! After many days, here’s my review of the Paris U2 show, on the 11th of july !

I must say that is was my first U2 show (and I hope not the last !) and, of course, for people who didn’t want to know a thing about future concerts, It’s better for them not to read below !

I decided, for this concert, to keep the surprise…so, I decided, long time before the show, that I did’nt want to see photos of the stage, or to know the setlists of the first European concerts…
The first thing that surprised me when I entered the “Stade de France” was, of course “The Claw”…Believe me, it’s so huge and impressive that it’s hard to really describe it… you can have the feeling that it was a spaceship who landed in the middle of the stadium ! And, by the way, you have the feeling too that you’re going to live something special ! A little thing funny : the “real” stage, in the middle, seems very little when you look at the “the claw”, and you can think that, depending on where you are on the stadium, you’re going to see the band with a very little size ! But the place we were, my girlfriend an I, was OK (on the left side of the stage, places with seats, with a complete view on the stage and of the stadium).

Kaiser Chiefs opened the show, and other surprise : the sound was good ! I was a little bit afraid of this, because it was my first show in such a big stadium…I didn’t know Kaiser Chiefs, but I can say that the band did the job ! The singer was pretty cool, running around the stage, jumping..it was really ok ! Other surprise : the screen upon the stage !...I understood why it was the “U2 360 Tour”, and for me, this was a very big idea : the screen is round, and you see all the musicians, with a very good quality, even if they turn back to you…I saw Bono’s back many times, when I looked at the stage, but if you looked at the screen you could think he was in front of you, that was very surprising !

But it’s time to talk about the show, the performance, and the songs ! A little regret : the concert began with daylight, and the first songs were played before the night came…but I was so happy to finally see them, after all these years ! The sound was louder than for Kaiser Chiefs and it was ok for me…I was happy to hear Bono’s voice, I thought his voice was really great, from the beginning to the end of the show…

I was very curious about the setlist too…of course, I know it’s difficult to satisfy everybody but I was happy they played new and old songs…of course, songs from “No Line..” took a large place in the show…I specially loved “Get on your boots”, which is not really one of my favourites songs of NLOTH, but played live, it was very “punchy” ! I was specially waiting for “Magnificent” too, one of my NLOTH’s favourite songs…the version was OK but I thought that this song was played too soon in the show, the crowd wasn’t “hot” enough (and it was still during daylight). Another highlight of the show was the incredible version of “I’ll Go Crazy…” A completely transformed song, with a great electronic beat, that changed the stadium into a wonderful night club, with a fantastic light show ! That was astonishing, the feeling that I was discovering an unknown song coming from “Pop” !

All the show alternates between great moments and other surprises…The beginning of “I still haven’t found…” was fantastic ! All the crowd (more than 90.000 people I think) sang the first verses of the song and Bono was quiet, that was very emotional ! I specially loved the “mini acoustic set” with “Desire” and Edge with his acoustic guitar…Another great moment of surprise was when Bono announced “The unforgettable fire” ! I never thought they played this one, it was absolutely fantastic, the night was around us, the stage was illuminated with the big screen upon it, that was really magic ! And let me tell you about “Sunday Bloody Sunday”….the whole stadium was illuminated with a green light, and of course, all the crowd was singing ! I particularly appreciated the “MLK” version, played for Aung San Suu Kyi, that was very sober…I was more sceptical when, during “Walk On”, people came around stage with an Aung San Suu Kyi mask on their faces, I thought it was a little bit too much… Other regret too during the “ISS Chat”…for me, that was an unnecessary moment….it could have been pretty cool, but it wasn’t really “live” (the message was recorded) and the rhythm of the show was a little bit “broken”..but all these feelings disappeared when, during an “encore”, they started to play “Ultra Violet” ! One of my favourite “Achtung Baby”’s song, and what a great surprise to hear it live ! For me, one of the best moment in the show, with Bono wearing a “light jacket”, playing with his hanged microphone ! This song was followed by “With or…” and “Moment of Surrender”, which was a perfect conclusion for the show, with people singing “Oh…Oh…Oh Oh..” at the end…no more song after this one, unfortunately, it would have been great…but the band took a little time on stage to say goodbye to the crowd, to thanks, that was cool…

To conclude (!), I must say that it was, for me, an incredibly moment to be in Paris this night…Of course, it’s a very big show, with many qualities and some defects too (not enough songs from “Achtung Baby” for me…), but at the end, it was incredible…it’s a different feeling than to be with a band in a smaller concert hall, but all the defects disappeared in my mind at the end of the show…the only thing that was still in my mind was the feeling that I was lucky to live such a great moment !
Thanks for having read this (long) review, hope it wasn’t too long and boring !
