  1. Thought it would be nice to sum up the (personal) most defining moments of U2.

    For me, in random order:

    Performance of 11 O'Clock Tick Tock at Hattem, 1982
    One of the best performances of this lovely song. Pure energy, a young band and a lovely 'Give Peace A Chance'-snippet.

    Bono on the roof during Electric Co. at Red Rocks, 1983
    Madness during a concert, climbing a stage and taking a lot of risks. Great performance though, purely seen on the VHS and unfortunately edited on the DVD.

    Bad during Live Aid, 1985
    Some hate it, many love it. The lengthy performance of Bad during the Live Aid-gig was a major breakthrough for U2, although it wasn't planned. After SBS, the band would play two more songs: Bad and Pride. Bad had a 10+ minute duration because Bono went mental. Pride had to be skipped.

    With or Without You at Paris, 1987
    Some people were hit by a teargass-bomb going off near the stage. Bono stops the song, asks if everyone is okay and continues playing. What follows is a lovely end to a once lovely live song.

    I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For/ Stand By Me at Stockholm, 1992
    To me one of the best versions of this song around, totally made by Stand By Me performed afterwards. The emotion, the Edge's vocals..just great.

    Mothers of the Disappeared a Santiago, 1998
    Breathtaking and very special. U2 playing MOTD in Santiago, Chile, with some of the mothers on stage. Goosebumps. Too bad Bono messed with the lyrics.

    All I Want Is You / Where the Streets Have No Name at Slane Castle, 2001
    Actually not that special but it was such a lovely performance, put on DVD that made a lot of people U2-fan. The energy, the atmosphere or the Irish crowd. Just brilliant.

    These moments are kept on film, leaving alone the dozen moments of U2 live where no cameras were available to film it or which haven't surfaced yet. Bootlegs though also contain these moments, defining moments of this lovely band.

  3. Zoo TV outside broadcast (or was it Zooropa??) at Wembley with phone up to Sarajevo. Talk about mood killer.

    Popmart Sarajevo.

    Poland 360 might be too. One of these gigs is going to be, for sure.

    Ehm...I pretty much meant Dirty Day at that show, on that moment.
    It's a personal thing tough, I think Casper pretty much showed all moments already, altough the videoclip of I Will Follow is defining as well. Being their first videoclip.

    Another nice defining moment would be the famous rooftop gig...


  9. Well, in some way. I think U2's defining moments are quite general. It's not necessarily a topic for personal lists, we have indeed dozens of that.
  10. Bad at Live Aid is the recording for me that still exhilirates like no ther can ... also seeing Bad fade in to Streets at the first Slane gig in 2001 was mesmerising and for me a defining moment as in "This is why I love this band".

  11. Although not a perfect concert "masterpiece", I would have to say The Live-Aid performance.
    IT is THE performance that put U2 as a household name.
    I was already a fan a few years before , but my friends were not aware of this band yet. After the show they became fans too.

    Most music critics have said that of all the bands that played that day, the most memorable were the performances by Queen and U2. I agree!
