1. Went to four shows and saw a different show from a very different view each night and without a doubt my favourite was Dublin I. It'll be hard to judge what constitutes the best night as everyone will have their own preferences.

I had no issue with seeing largely the same songs again as once the performances are of a high standard there can be no real complaints about the set list - it was first and foremost very balanced for most of the tour (a bit slow(er) at the start of the leg perhaps).

It may be taken for granted now but before this tour began what would we have given to see TUF & UV back on the set list?

The one thing I'll maintain is that Pride is wasted coming after SBS. While I love MoS as a closer I have to disagree with the boys in believing that a slow burner at the end is the way you should leave people. Taking a page out of Bruce Springsteen (who's ending encore for most gigs was in no order 'Twist & Shout', 'Glory Days' & 'Dancing in the Dark'. Move Pride to the end, make it a four song encore and you'll both save the song and leave people feeling more buzzed.

American leg should be interesting; think they'll get more songs. 'NY' will obviously feature but I reckon they'll probably get 'Discotheque', Drowning Man and The Wanderer, amongst others.
  2. I don't know about the shows, since I only attended two. But setlist wise I would say that Wembley II had pretty much everything, with Amsterdam II and Dublin I and Gothenburg II after that. But then again: can't really say if the band were on fire or not. The setlist in Sheffield was standard, but listening to the recordings I find the performance brilliant. And of course, we can't forget abot Chorzow, can we?

Agreed on all three counts. Virtually everyone who got to a show will feel they were at something special, but I think that's where the boys have succeeded again - the sets might not change that dramatically from night to night but they put everything into each gig and leave you feeling like you were present for a unique moment in time, and they manage that night after night. And even more importantly, I couldn't agree more with regard to TUF and UV - so many people were hoping against hope that they might get a bit of airtime perhaps without genuinely thinking they would, myself included, but not as they have now. Such a great bonus to any tour.

    You really think so?
  4. Still miss a bit of Pop content on the shows. Even no snippets were used...They should give some Pop-songs place in this tour...Still i think it was one hell of a first leg.
  5. Looking forward to how the tour will be remembered in 4 years time.
Most of what has been said so far, has been said about the (nowadays bashed) Vertigo tour, too at this stage. Partly with exactly the same arguments ("who would have thought that song xy ever gets played again"; "unique shows"; "amazing stage and lights").

For the records: I do think that this is their best tour of the decade. Might give a detailed summary later.

Only song from Pop I'm really looking forward to is Mofo.

  7. I'd love to hear Discotheque, Please, Wake Up Dead Man and Gone too.
  8. Discotheque could be played. Why not segue it with Crazy Tonight? The transition could be wonderful.

Agreed with regard to how this will be perceived. I don't think Vertigo was bad by any means - although I am more inclined to listen to Elevation shows as a preference - but they weren't as adventurous as 360 has been thus far, harking back to the days of ZooTV and PopMart with the ludicrous stage and ballsier approach in that regard, but coupled with 10-15 years of experience to go with it.

I also think that the songs that have been brought back, although perhaps not as many, have been more appreciated when you think about something like UV - it only saw the light of the live arena for 3-4 fifths of one tour and seems to be widely regarded by many (inc. myself in fairness) as one of the best they've ever written, whereas songs revived on the Vertigo tour like Gloria, An Cat Dubh etc. have each seen a lot more service over the years and so, whilst still novel in their revival at the time, could arguably be seen as not as appreciated. What is quite telling is that with UV and TUF, they've been retained as set regulars as opposed to being regularly rotated on this first leg, whereas the older material brought back on the last tour was rotated a lot. I suppose that is a moot point with regard to whether one prefers older songs being kept as regular set participants or whether you prefer to the variety - you could argue either which way I guess. I know what I prefer though

One of the main critiques as far as I can tell regarding the Vertigo tour was the politics being thrown in, and I think that's been dumbed down on this tour. It's still there, e.g. SBS becoming a tribute of sorts to the people of Iran and the trouble there, Walk On becoming a tribute to Aun Sang Suu Kyi and the promotion of the ONE campaign with help from Desmond, but it doesn't feel like it drags the show down like I feel it did last tour. The political side is a bit more discreet, especially with SBS - there's no lengthy speech and blindfold lark, the only obvious reference is in the intro. with the Radio Tehran segment and I get the feeling that's not necessarily that obvious unless one is in the know already.

This is just my perception, not what I believe everyone should think - no doubt there may be people who feel the politics is still too much or even moreso than on the last tour, but there's the beauty of opinion.

EDIT - if they're gonna bring anything back from Pop, Last Night On Earth please!

  10. Playing two kind of identical songs after each other? Not a good plan, Discotheque is not needed anymore

    Nice post Harry.
