I don't want to start an internet wrestling match, but my take is that the fact they start the tours in America is because they still think of the fans.
I shall elaborate....
Most artists of the size of U2 (Stones, Madonna) now use sponsors and huge commercialism on their tours to help fund them. Despite this these artists sell their tickets at huge prices.
Whilst some of the tickets to U2 shows are very pricey, and none could be considered 'cheap', most are affordable and have been kept as low as possible. And this is without the benefit of any sponsorship of the tour. U2 (the company) fund these tours themselves.
Now, it would be extremely benevolent of the band to do this directly out of their own pockets, and maybe they should every now and then (eg the Africa idea would be very good), but the reality is that they earn a living, as do the rest of us, just not on the same scale. So the way they do this is to get as many bums on seats as quickly as possible. The only place they can do this is America. The European/Pacific shows cost a fortune to host, whereas the arena shows of America are relatively much cheaper and easier to transport around.
As long as they still come to us and do a decent number of shows so as many of us as possible can come, I don't really care where they start or finish. The shows on Vertigo had significant differences between America and the Rest of the World (as evinced by the difference between Chicago and Milan).
And not everything is done in America. The most recent premiere was in France at Cannes for U23D. And, according to Remy's information, the next show of it will be in Holland.
We all have our own opinions, that's what makes this site so good. This is just my take on it.......
