1. No Line is not really back to the basics

If I get it right that's what they tried with the last one.

That's right. "New Achtung Baby" they said. And erm... But dream out loud: maybe next time.

  3. No, but it's closer to All That You Can't Leave Behind than put it in a new cathegory isn't it?

    I/1. Boy
    I/2. October
    I/3. War
    II/1. The Unforgettable Fire
    II/2. The Joshua Tree
    II/3. Rattle And Hum
    III/1. Achtung Baby
    III/2. Zooropa
    III/3. Pop
IV/1. All That You Can't Leave Behind
IV/2. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb
IV/3. No Line On The Horizon

Anybody can feel the changes between them. The first trilogy was the pure U2, the second was the meeting of the electronics, synthezisers etc and the American music. The third was the most experimental and I think that's the favourite of most people. The fourth is the "back to roots" era where we are now.
So I think they could open the new trilogy now with Songs Of Ascent. Bring us something new!

The changes are there, but I don't really see a "trilogy" in the albums. For instance, I think TUF is more a transition between the first three albums and TJT.
And I definitely don't see AB and Pop in the same category. Maybe in the way they put themselves in the spotlights, but definitely not musically.
And last: I don't see how NLOTH fits in the same category as ATYCLB and HTDAAB.

U2 brings as always something: you just don't know exactly what to expect. Of course, every album has it landmarks that sound like U2, simply because it IS U2.

To me it sounds more like a TUF-ish album.
No kidding, hence why they start playing those TUF songs this tour; they fit with the NLOTH and the ATYCLB tunes...
  6. Well, there albums do fall into trilogies (and AB is similar to Pop)

But SOA will be a direct sequel to NLOTH, so in this case they'll have an album quadrilogy.

You know, I've always thought that about the albums being in groups of three, a lot of people probably have. The sad thing is, I don't reckon U2 will do 2 more albums after Songs of Ascent

You never know, they DID sign that 12 year contract like 1 or 2 years ago with universal or live nation (can't remember...)
  9. Hope SOA will be something like Slug. Love that track...

  10. Oh man, that would be awesome...one of the prettiest songs
  11. i am listening to "my life in the bush of ghosts" by david byrne and brian eno, the 2006 remaster from the 1981 release. this record is just as critically acclaimed, fresh, layered, complex and interesting as it was when it first came out.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Life_in_the_Bush_of_Ghosts_(album)

based on what i've read in the neil mccormick book, this kind of music isn't U2 territory by any means (particularly noting the cautiousness of Larry and Adam), and one might argue that they already explored this kind of direction with "Passengers OS1" and Edge's "Captive". but U2 can seal its influence on another generation of popular music if it pushes the envelope in the studio a bit, not trying to constantly re-brand this current "back to basics" feel. if they don't, i fear their future tours will start looking like the rolling stones tours.

an interesting and complex album musically could fuel a very good arena or auditorium tour. forget stadiums for a while.

i think a younger audience that now grabs the complexity of pink floyd and radiohead and sustains the popularity of their records for years can accept new territory for U2.

this is my hope for "songs of ascent" and perhaps another future release.

  12. Maybe but that could just be from the CD money and downloads they get after they retire...
