On October 11th, I decided to begin a journey into the depths of my U2 collection. Inspired by the numbers of bootlegs I possessed, but never listened to all the way through, I decided that by the end of the year, I would listen to every U2 track I had on my iPod. All 542 of them.
I ended up downloading more- WAY more- throughout my project, as I re-read U2 By U2, and listened to more bootlegs, becoming curious about surrounding shows and intriguing setlists. I currently have roughly 825 U2 tracks, and ended up listening to 670.
Studio albums, bootlegs, rare tracks, demos, sessions...everything I owned at the time got added to the queue. I archived my journey with accompanying reviews of ALMOST every show and studio album on my LiveJournal, which wasn't getting much use anyway.
It proved to be an amazing experience, heightening my profound respect for the band and my absolute love for their music. It rounded out my live knowledge and educated my ear to each tour's little surprises, and trained it to pick out the studio cuts' best features. I highly recommend doing this once throughout the year, setting yourself a time limit to see that it gets accomplished and not blown off.
It wasn't easy- some periods proved to send me on a little bit of a burnout- but it never lasted more than a few days, and overall, it was clearly a fun, enjoyable project.
I'd LOVE for you to read through parts of it on my LiveJournal- particularly "The Grand Finale, Parts 1 & 2" (The 2 latest posts)...I really threw a lot of my most creative writing into the reviews, and you'll get the chance to see the roots of my U2 appreciation. Anything beyond that you care to read is purely up to you, but I though I'd throw it your guys' way that I even did this, and hopefully I'll get some feedback on it.
Feel free to post comments here as opposed to on the LiveJournal...that'll give non-readers a chance to see some of what I've written on a more trafficked forum.
Thanks for reading through this, and potentially the LJ stuff. You guys rule!!!

Love,
Matt
