1. the best lyrics is from acrobat and that is of course
"don't let the bastards grind you down"
  2. *wipes a thin layer of dust from this topic*

my current top ten, in no particular order:

"let's see colours that have never been seen, let's go to places no one else has been"

"the lines on your face are a map to your soul"

"where you live should not decide wether you live or wether you die"

"it's not why you're running, it's where you're going, it's not what you're dreaming but what you're gonna do"

"a man with a suitcase full of things he doesn't need"

"I'm on an island on a busy intersection, I can't go forward, no, I can't turn back"

"only love can leave such a mark"

"in summer I can taste the salt of the sea, there's a kite blowing out of control on the breeze"

"you're packing a suitcase for a place no one else has been, a place that has to be believed to be seen"

"if you dream, then dream out loud, and don't let the bastards grind you down"

  3. "We're binary code... A one and a zero"

Think about it as Ali being "THE One" and Bono being "a zero"
    So true in many relationships (woman=1 ; man = 0) i presume

I JUST heard that part before I read this! haha
  5. I could never put them in order, but..;

"A house doesn't make a home, don't leave me here alone..."

"You got to cry without weeping, talk without speaking, scream without raising your voice..."

"But all the promises we make, from the cradle to the grave, when all I want is you..."

"At the moment of surrender, I folded to my knees, I did not notice the passers-by and they did not notice me..."

"And if the night runs over, and if the day won't last, and if your way should falter along this stony pass, it's just a moment, this time will pass..."

"Not the only one, who's happy to go blind..."

"Johnny take a walk with your sister the moon, let her pale light in to fill up your room..."

"And I feel, like I'm slowly, slowly, slowly slipping under, and I feel, like I'm holding onto nothing..."

"It's not a hill it's a mountain, as you start out the climb, you see for me I've been shouting, but we're gonna make it all the way to the light, but I know I'll go crazy if I don't go crazy tonight..."

"Say it's true, it's true, and we can break through, though torn in two, we can be one..."

  6. I would have to put aa lot of thought into this if I were going to make a list, but in the Linear version of "Winter" where he says "...at 21, I was born a son, and on that day I knew I could kill.." gets me every time.
  7. "a place that has to be belived to be seen" - Walk On

"we're one but we're not the same" - One

"they took your life, they could not take your pride" - Pride

"its no scret that a liar won't believe anyone else" - The Fly

"the universe exploded cuz of one man's lie" - The Fly

"you miss too much these day, if you stop to think" - UTEOTW

    "i'm wide awake...i'm not sleeping" - Bad

"the real battle is begun to claim the vicotr jesus won, on, sunday bloody sunday" - SBS

"your love was a lightbulb hanging over my bed" - Ultraviolet

"lift my days, light up my nights" - Mysterious ways

  8. Someone mentioned Acrobat, and the best line being "Don't let the bastards grind you down"...but I think that the best line of the song is actually

    I must be an acrobat
To talk like this, and act like that

Perhaps a little pathetic to admit, but that line alone, knowing the weight it carries in that song with such heavy emotion, could almost bring me to cry. That's a powerful, POWERFUL song.

The way he sings it, it seems so desperate...like he knows he acts that way, he just can't help it. And he always says that he'll never act that way again, but in the end, he always will. Sometimes, it almost sounds like Bono is fighting back tears in the song, which I'm sure he's not...but anyway, the point of it all is, it's not necessarily the lyric that makes the lyric itself great- the delivery is a key part, because it's how you hear that lyric that makes you connect with it.

I wouldn't be so sure... It has always sounded like that, to me. In fact, I almost cried several times while singing it, in fact it's very powerful. Probably the most (emotionally) powerful song of the whole album together with Ultraviolet and One... And leaving out UOTEOTW, Horses, etc of that ranking means a lot
  10. This is one a those top 10's that will always change for me, but I'll choose the following for now:

    1. One- ''one life, you've got to do what you should.''

    2. Until the End of the World- ''in my dream, i was drowning my sorrows, my sorrows they learned to swim.''

    3. Still Havent Found- ''you carried the cross of my shame, you know I believe it.''

    4. Running to Stand Still- ''you gotta cry without weeping, talk without speaking, scream without raising your voice.''

    5. Acrobat- ''you know that your time is coming round, so dont let the bastards grind you down.''

    6. The Fly- ''its no secret that a conscience, can sometimes be a pest.''

    7. Bad- ''This desparation, Dislocation, Separation, Condemnation, Revelation, In temptation, Isolation, Desolation. Let it go. And so fade away.''

    8. Electrical Storm- "let's see colours that have never been seen, let's go to places no one else has been"

    9. All I Want is You- ''all the promises we make, from the cradle to the grave, when all I want is you.''

    10. So Cruel- ''i gave you everything that you ever wanted, wasnt what you wanted.''

Hm, well I definitely feel a little better about my slight, sneaking suspicion then

  12. I think Electrical Storm is in their top 3 best lyrics ever written, the whole song. "If the sky can crack, there must be some way bad, to love" is one of those lyrics that must have lyricists all over the world slapping themselves on the forehead for, for not coming up with first

But seriously, there's not a LINE in that song I don't think is absolutely fantastic.
