1. I'm discovering new music/bands, and one of the artists that I was really interested in was Sufjan Stevens. I had heard good things about his music, his voice and his lyrics (keeping in mind that I'm a lyrics-freak, I must find a deeper meaning behind any lyrics!), I had also heard Chicago and liked it (also mentioned in Snow Patrol's Hands Open).
...anyway, so I got Illinoise and am listening and really enjoying it right now.
I'm not a big topic opener as you know, but I'm just loving this guy's music and was wondering if anyone here was into his work? Any fans?

edit: it's Mr. Stevens, could one of the crew please add the S, typo
  2. Hey Ali.

Wow! Thanks Roxanne, I was starting to think that I'm the weirdo of these forums...no one replied, are you the only one here who enjoys his music?!
Illinoise is interesting, with each song you also learn a piece of illinois' history. I loved the John Wayne Gacy song...I read his story on Wikipedia and then listened to it for the first time right after reading, the mood of the song matches the story perfectly, I almost cried. And I loved the ending conclusion.
Anyways, I'm loving his work so far
  4. I must say I never heard of Sufjan Stevens. Do you have a link to YouTube or something to a song that you recommend?
  5. Come on Feel the Illinoise is a fantastic concept album. A much darker, more intimate album is Seven Swans, and the Michigan album is also very brilliant. My favorite is Seven Swans. HIs earlier stuff is extremely bizarre and experimental (Enjoy your Rabbit and A Sun Came). His latest is called The BQE. It's a concept album about the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, a 10 mile highway in new york city. The album is completely orchestral... very beautiful.

I've had the opportunity to see him twice. Once back in 2004 in a small club and then again in 2007 at tower Theater in Phillly... both awesome shows. He has a haunting presence and is an absolutely incredible singer/songwriter/composer. He's fantastic.
  6. I think ill try this guy.

Here is Chicago, one of his most famous songs, as I said even Snow Patrol mention it in their lyrics:
"Put Sufjan Stevens on / and we'll play your favourite song / 'Chicago' bursts to life and your / sweet smile remembers you."

And here is the John Wayne Gacy Jr. song I mentioned, but make sure you know John Wayne's story (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Wayne_Gacy) before you listen to it:

He's a great concept album guy, just check out illinoise's track list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illinois_(album) , it's all about illinois, places and people (and weird song names too ).
  8. Wow....I must admit, this is actually very good. Nice!
He has a nice voice (somehow sounds familiar) and the music/lyrics are very good.
  9. Sufjan makes very awesome music, good to see I'm not the only fan
