1. I've kind of gone with the 'pick something that wasn't Point Depot' option.

MSG '01 is a good shout. Deviates us from the Zoo / Lovetown obsession too.

Understood, I should have mentioned Wembley Zooropa also. Love that Kenny G Bad!
  3. Is a mere 2-4 shows considered a 'residency'? Not really.

The Melbourne Lovetown shows in October of 1989, 7 shows in 10 days, that is more of a "residency" in the more traditional terms.

I'd say that the shows that U2 played Sydney (3) days in September of 1989, (2) shows in October 1989 and (3) more in November of 1989 were also a true residency.

But if that is the criteria, Point Depot's 4 shows and the Chicago Elevaation (May 2001 shows) are right up there.

The 4 Elevation Chicago shows were pretty great. The 4th show in particular is interesting as the set starts with "Elevation" but then it goes all ZOOTV as they play "The Fly", "Even Better Than the Real Thing", "Mysterious Ways", "One" and "Until The End Of The World" in succession. You can hear the crowd 'losing it' during that show.

All U2 shows tend to be very good. A good amount are even great. But then there are those that are truly magical. I'd say that the May 16, 2001 Chicago show was in the 'magical' category.

I agree- special to me as they're hometown gigs, though I wasn't lucky enough to get to see them- nor would I have been old enough to appreciate what I was seeing/hearing.

Anyway, I came back to say that I decided to listen through a "residency", though as pointed out above, they're traditionally longer, I know what Gerard means. The best couple-night-stay in a single city, where all the shows were great.

    I'm trying this one out-

    1987-10-28: Rosemont, IL
    1987-10-29: Rosemont, IL
    1987-10-30: Rosemont, IL

No breaks between shows, 3 nights in a row, and also in my home state. I've heard the 28th was a really special night, and I haven't heard it yet, so I'll see how the other ones follow it up. Couple gigs on my queue between now and these shows, but they'll be listened through probably by next week/week after next, so I'll post my reviews as I listen and keep you all posted!
  5. First time i notice they played so many times in Chicago

Hmm it's not really a residency ofcourse... But i'd like to vote for Torhout - Werchter on the 3th and 4th of July 1982
Not because i'm from Belgium, but because the guys just finished a long American tour and still the band wanted to give all, which resulted in a warm reaction from the crowd...
I also believe that the TW perfomances (all over the years) contributed to the success of the band
+ i loved it when Edge said "in the future, we want to see how successful we are by the place we have on the poster of TW" (as they were, i believe, the 3rd band to perform that year and later on always got a better spot)
  6. Point Depot is my choice, with a mention of New York nights after 9/11

  7. Great choices, Aidan.

And yes, Chicago is the third-most played city in the US, in terms of U2. Right behind Los Angeles and New York. The United Center- where Vertigo//Chicago was filmed, and the Elevation Tour had multiple runs- is also U2's fifth-most played venue in the entire world.

Dublin is the first one... Could you tell me the second Matt?

    Greetings from Brazil

  9. Yes, Dublin is their most played city. London ranks in second, with the three US cities coming behind that- New York, LA, and Chicago.

  10. Thanks Matt
