1. I understand

  2. I obviously don't. Now thinking a bluetooth keyboard with the Desire would be just as good (and fast) as a netbook. The wonder. . . .
  3. Dont think a keyboard will improve your browsing experience a lot. Especially if you get used to the (onscreen) keyboard.

It's not so much the words per minute rate that makes a bluetooth keyboard handy, it's the fact that the onscreen keyboard itself takes up over 2/3 of the screen. I prefer the N900 and N97 mini type form factor that allows you keep the full screen is use for the web page whilst you type with the keyboard.

As of yet there aren't any Android handsets with this form factor. There's the one I own (that Motorola have condemned by not updating it) and the Motorola Milestone which has a crap keyboard.

  5. Keyboard disappears after typing right? I catch myself using the onscreen keyboard when i just want to enter a short url.

I may have to root the Desire so that I can apply a hack that prevents the on screen keyboard popping up when I enter a data entry box when the bluetooth device is connected. I plan on rooting it anyway so shouldn't be an issue. I might not bother at all but a BT keyboard will be handy for those lengthier emails etc
  7. Yeah, rooting is nice anyway. Are there risks involved?

I wish the new firmware for my phone is launched soon.... They brought a very nice devkit, but you cant run programs you built yet since it compiles for the unreleased firmware

Nah not much risk with rooting. Similar to jailbreaking. Might be a little touchy on a device with network operator custom ROM's but I plan on buying factory unlocked anyway.

Is the N900 still waiting on 1.2?

Hopefully they get up to 2.0 before they jump ship to meego? I have saw meego running on an N900 without a GUI.
  9. Dont understand why they dont come jailbreaked out of the box

Still waiting for 1.2 yes. An alpha version was leaked, but havent tested that one yet. Dont miss much. There are just one or two bugs i have seen once in a while. One is that the thumbnailing services hangs on certain AVI files. This drains the battery enormously. Worked around it by using another video player.

Also the browser has some quirks, flash performance is a bit poor. Switched to Opera 10 Mobile this week, realllllllly good browser. Thought the standard one was fast.

PR 1.2 will bring some new functionality as well, enabling video calling (and the frontcam) and some small features. Major update of PR 1.2 is that it ships with the new Qt framework, the framework apps are built in for Symbian, Maemo and Meego. It is even possible to develop for those 3 + Windows fairly easily.

Dont think the N900 will get a PR 2 though. Think we'll have (a workable) Android 2.1 for N900 sooner But it doesnt really matter since the whole system is pretty moddable. Root access is very easy and lots of linux apps are ported. For example KMplayer.
  10. N900 with android 2.1. Drool
  11. It just boots, no drivers for radio chipset yet:
