I doubt you still find cheap hotel rooms as they usually go really up, especially for Rome and Paris I noticed that a single room suddenly cost like 50 euro more.
Try your luck with hostels (www.hostelworld.com), maybe u're lucky.

actually having looked at the majority of the shows with tickets still available, all that seems to be left are really expensive tickets...

so looks like i had this idea a bit too late

guess i'll just have to cross my fingers for more dates next year....

there's less risk travelling with no gig ticket than there is with travelling with no confirmed accomodation.

really!? so are you suggesting foreign touts? what are they like?! more reasonable than english ones?!

not necessarily touts but there is always lots of tickets knocking around the venue. There were loads in Barcelona going for less than face value. I even had spares for Dublin with me. There are also ticket drops on show day from the venue box office.

This was the norm for most European shows last summer.

hey .. I can tell you that for every show last year I went to, there were still GA tickets available outside ... from fans for fans ... ok, there is limited supply, as not everyone has a spare ticket .. but there are loads of people that bought the max of 4 tickets with their presale code ... and they dont need all four tix , and for different reasons they had not sold the tickets prior to show .... so if you turn up one or two days before the show, you must be abl;e to find a ticket for a normal price ...

accommodation wise, try hostels .... or what about this growing community of couchsurfing ?
which is a great and cheap alternative .... one or two nights in a hostel wont kill you !

if you go abroad ... take a warm blooded place ... like spain or portugal or italy for true fired up crowd response ..... although spanish peeps were more relaxed than the italians, they do anyhthing to get in front ... and they dont respect the que .... ah well ... go and see for yourself ... its very enjoyable

Even local residents buy tickets trying to make a quick buck and soon realize that they can't shift the. Price drops. . . Many fans also buy the full allowance of tickets at sale and are willing to sell the spares on to other fans for face value.

hmmmmm. sounds really encouraging but at the same time a bit of a huge gamble to go all that way without a guaranteed ticket...

I had Barcelona booked last year before I had a ticket. 600 quid spent before id even considered a ticket.

well thanks for the advice! (and anyone who has anything to add keep it coming!)

i was definitely planning on going somewhere hot (spain, greece or turkey) and i dont have any problem with staying in a hostel or anywhere like that as long as it's not really expensive! and if its a really hot place and the worst comes to the worst just don't go to bed or find an all night bar or something!

guess my only worry is getting a ticket (preferably GA!) i will speak to my mate and see what he says... dont really fancy going on my own!

how long you planning the trip for? You can save 1 nights accommodation costs by flying home the morning after the gig. Hit bar after the show, stay until closing time then sleep at the airport.

I can confirm that there are tickets available on the concert day. Legally sold at the entrance. In Zagreb (2nd day), I was able to buy two tickets (officially sold) just one hour before U2 took the stage. There were also lots of people selling tickets outside the venue - saw some selling for face value.
I could say the same for Milan 1, though I was there at about 4 PM. I had the tickets, so I didn't check if there were tickets still available officially, but I reckon there were, as people outside the venue were also selling tickets for even less than face value. I guess this is a clever policy from the organisers to prevent touts from reselling tickets for huge amounts of money.
