    October was the more religious album of the early ones wasn't it? It has a more new wave sound and I like that - I'm kinda stuck on those records at the moment. Have to say I like everything on it except Fire and Is That All - terrible songs; but the difficult second record needs to be there no matter what people think of it.

  3. Sounds like a terrible New Wave effort - maybe that's what puts people off listening. Much of NW was utter dosh but that's an extreme example of 'Crap Wave'.

  5. That's the main thing. I'd go so far as calling it their best album up to The Joshua Tree.

  7. I'm serious. The Joshua Tree is better but for me, nothing came close until then except October. It's a fantastic show of Adam's bass as well. I don't see why there's all the hate - it's like Original Soundtracks; it sucks but Miss Sarajevo and Your Blue Room (both overrated songs) are the best on that album. Do people hate rock and roll or they're stuck on how good One is (it isn't).

    And remember it had to all be improvised yet again because of the stolen lyrics and song titles in that briefcase, so for what it is and what it isn't (U2's very best album versus U2's killer skills at the time) it's actually pretty damn good. October and Gloria don't even show the best of what that album have to show - October is overrated too.

  9. I’m also not saying it’s the best album, but that’s subjective. The only thing that’s certain is that U2 is a great band (and that’s a fact!)

    One is overrated, October (song) is not. It's a wonderful and haunting ballad able to touch people very inside.
    Oh anyway, the album itlsef contains very powerful songs (most of them are, in fact), but I don't know how to explain it, it lacks something. Something that Boy lacks too, that The Unforgettable Fire lacks too, that War and Pop lack (partially)........ and something that only Zooropa, Achtung Baby and The Joshua Tree (partially) really have. The spark.

    But what you have to remember is when October was out, U2 had been recording music professionally for less than the best part of two years and hadn't had any real hits outside of pirate radio and college radio, so it was kind of a still learning experience - not that they were bad at it though!

    Zooropa has plenty of spark in it. Every song is something, same as The Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby and Pop and Original Soundtracks. I'm surprised they didn't lose their creativity more earlier on and actually gained it - look at other bands who were huge in their first ten years and then you wonder where it all went - Aerosmith are the band I always compare to U2 for their music but in different eras. Their 70s was U2's 80s, their 80s was U2's 90s and U2's 2000s was Aero's 90s and 00s.
