1. I'm surprised that no one else has opened a topic for this yet. Especially after a month and now (only) two failed attempts to stop the leak.

You have all seen the news reports and seen the pictures (right?). This is obviously one of the largest environmental disasters to strike the world in the 21st century. At least 12,000 barrels of oil have been entering the Gulf Coast as of April 20th.

    Here are some numbers:

This leak has already affected the coast of Florida and has a great chance of being carried by currents to further parts of the world. It has crippled Louisiana's economy and fishing industry.

More information, pictures, video and news is at your fingertips.

I have not looked in the Politics topic for any discussion on the topic, but even if there has been, this affects so many people and deserves it's own topic.
  2. We had a similar thing (the pretrol tanker "Prestige") here in Spain in 2003, it's horrible. I'm sorry for you guys.

Fuck BP for the "work" they're doing, though.

Oh yes, I'm sorry Sergio. Luckily, it hasn't affected my area, so I'm grateful for that. Thanks.

It's awful. I cannot even imagine the rage that the Louisiana locals feel. Especially when there are other organizations with multiple other suggestions and ideas that have offered their help, but have been refused by BP.

BP is now building a "relief well" but won't be ready til August. It's pretty ridiculous tbh. A volcano stopped erupting and and the biggest shut down if airspace was reopened and back to regular schedules quicker than these blokes can plug a hole.
  5. Sorry for the amount of errors on that. I'm on my iPod and typing while bleary eyed isn't easy

  6. Oh yes, I actually turned my tv on right when CNN first reported the failure and the new plan. I was so pissed.

Exactly. BP's whole operation is questionable and extremely risky. I can't believe that they are a hundred billion dollar a year company... All of the executives should be replaced.

Then again, this proves how much underwater exploration should be done. We know more about space then we do our own oceans. Maybe if we did a lot more research at whatnot, we would have a better handle on things.

This also calls for an immediate switch to an alternative fuel. President Obama made the right move by freezing all of the oceanic oil rig operations.
  7. The drill was commissoned by the Obama government and the rig was owned by a completely seperate company than BP. Wildlife and ecosystem aside, BP are the big losers with this one.

The USA uses as much oil as any of us and as long as man has this reliance on the black stuff, the longer we take the risk of spillages.
  8. If they wanted to shut the hole they'd do it in 12 hours. Russia already did the same thing for 4-5 times without any problems.
  9. so why wouldn't they want to do it? the shit's floating out of that leak for weeks now
  10. Spills at that depth are rare

Yeah they spill oil for fun Conventional measures dont work at this depth.
