1. José Saramago, Nobel Prize for literature on 1998, has passed away today at home, in Lanzarote (Spain).

I don't know if you guys know him, but he's one of the biggest writers ever. He wrote in Portuguese but spoke Spanish perfectly, he was a beloved writer in Brazil, Portugal and Spain, and in some other places I guess.

I was lucky enough to meet him at the Book Festival in Madrid two years ago, he dedicated to my mother her favorite book and signed me an autograph.... Oh how I love his books and his speeches! I'm devastated, as well as many other people around the globe. May he rest in peace, may he...

    Requiescat In Pace, maestro.
  2. I agree with you Sergio, Saramago was one of the best, and me being a portuguese as i am, knew his work for a long time. RIP

    Nuno
  3. Being a catholic, I can't say I liked his work. But apparently he was very good craftwise.
    Rest In Peace!
  4. We in Portugal are devastated with this recent news!
May he rest in peace, he truly deserves it.
At least we can apreciate his works, Blindness, Caim, Memorial do Convento.

    What a master!!

  5. same here in Argentina...
he was very loved and read!!

    Thanks Jose,
May the Lord have mercy on your soul.

    .............

    Sleep
    Sleep tonight
    And may your dreams
    Be realized

    ..............
  6. I have to admit, I did not know him, hadn't heard of him until you posted this sad news.
But I'm always willing to learn, especially when it comes to literature.
Is there one book you can recommend most of him, Sergio? I found out that amazon.de lists German translations of his works, so I'm considering getting a book of Mr. Saramago to get to know about his work. Which one would you say is his best? Or most touching, or thoughtful?

    may he rest in peace.
  7. I specially loved his Ensaio sobre a cegueira (or Blidness in English, or Die Stadt der Blinden in German), you have to be a proficient reader to get it but once you do, it's a great, ironic description of the capitalist society and the worst and best parts of the human characters. O Evangelio Segundo Jesus Cristo (or The Gospel According To Jesus Christ), A Caverna (or The Cave) and Todos os nomes (or All The Names) arer excellent too

    We'll miss him
  8. We just have to thank him for everything...He was and will always be an icon and a master.
