    I consider Pop (album) as a complete win, the only fail (which is in fact the low that makes the 97-98 look like a "bad" era to most fans) was the tour, which suffered of under-rehearse, too many under-average performances and a setlist which wasn't good enough to be as staple and un-changed as it was... But the album itself is at least 9/10 for me, it's only worse than Zooropa and Achtung Baby.


    Don't forget Bono's way below par voice on the tour
  2. I still think "Discothèque" was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better live. And still think it should've been the opener, not "Mofo"...

    I don't understand the big rave about Mofo, I think its over-rated and is one of the worst songs on Pop, yeah the opener should have been Discotheque or Gone or something...

    Nooooo way. Mofo was the best opener. What song would you rather want played after the lemon? And Discotheque was great when it went into Velvet Dress. Gone would be an awful opening.
  5. Mofo is one of their best songs and I think it's underrated as whole Pop - but yes, many songs sound better live - but isn't it good? Do you want to hear the same live as it is on album?

The huge high energy of Pop Muzik with the band entering the stadium/stage the way they did, was SO absolutely perfect, them parading up with the "Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop muzik!" blasting through the PA and the whole crowd just going berserk could only be complemented by the high energy techno of "Mofo". Best song to open with IMO.

    Discotheque is a great opening song- but not with the energy of Pop Muzik. That would have to be a much more subtle opening to a show, sort of like "City of Blinding Lights" on Vertigo...where it builds, and finally, on that first big guitar part, all the lights kick on and (in PopMart's case) the stage goes absolutely crazy. I just don't think that's what PopMart was built for- a subtle intro- and I think kicking everything off with such a huge party song like Pop Muzik while the band enters doesn't deserve to go back down to quiet while "Discotheque" starts.

    You need a real loud number to start the show. Blinding Lights was perfect for Vertigo (as was Zoo Station for ZooTV, Streets for JT and Lovetown), and the ones I preferred more so - oh and Love And Peace starting some shows was awesome too - because it starts off quietly and the show really is getting ready to leave the ground, literally like a 747.

    Mofo has that awesome bass line to start off with the guitar and the drums. It just works. I would have liked Playboy Mansion in there somewhere too because that is one of my favourite U2 songs ever, but it worked as it should have. The crowd as soon as they hear that 'daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa da daaa daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa and Bono's ''pump it up''!!!' bit they get going. Look at the shows in South America, Edmonton, Sarajevo, Miami - all of 'em.

    Any song opens a U2 show great but it's a rock and fuckin' roll show - it's gotta rock to start with. This is why I think Boots works a hell of a lot better than Breathe - it's got that guitar bit at the beginning which just goes through you. Although I'm sure Larry's drum intro there works wonders too - I haven't experienced anything except Vertigo so I don't know yet.

    360 is the only show I've seen in the flesh, but I can't imagine in my head, the anticipation for a show to just smack you square in the face to be any greater than it was during "Breathe"...Edge's guitar feedback is really the biggest tease...like, COME ON!!! COME ON!!!!

    But yeah, I feel like Mofo is very similar to City of Blinding Lights and that they both suited the tours. Mofo starts off with that electronic bassline that just gets everybody super-pumped to get ready for liftoff, much like Edge's delay-studded guitar rhythm faded into City of Blinding lights before the piano kicked in, elevating it higher, until the slide part came in, and we have left the ground


  12. I like it a lot. I know it doesn't fit with U2's usual standards, but I think it's a very cool track. If it hadn't been released as a U2 song I think it would have gotten much more respect.
