1. So I have been thinking about learning some other language. I speak my native portuguese, english quite decently and I can understand some spanish. I know spanish would probably be much useful to me, but I don't really like it, no offence to the spanish out there. Plus, it is very complicated, pretty much as hard as portuguese.
So I thought german would be nice, and it seems to have some similarities with english, which I am already familiar with.
Is there anybody here who has learned german? I mean, non native speakers. I would like to learn it more like a mental exercise, not that seriously, so I am mostly looking for websites that can teach me a little, not books or payed courses.
  2. I learnt German up to A-level at secondry school. Really good language to learn, much preferred over the other option we had (French). Really simple to pick up and the similarities between it and English makes it even easier to learn.

Don't know of any websites though since I learnt at school, but would recommend learning it if you want to.
  3. Good language to learn, although I didn't particularly enjoy it in school because of my bitch teacher. I suggest you learn it. It's easy and of course, a great country to visit.
  4. I speak the German language pretty well: I grew up always watching German TV (my parents at that time lived in a Dutch town called Kerkrade, so for those who know.......they know). I always lived in towns and cities in the east of the Netherlands, so close to the German border.
I have some German blood running through my vaines, because I have some German relatives as well: my grandmother (may God rest her soul) came from Germany (Wattenscheid) and I still have some distant relatives living there.
Nowadays, some 30 - 40% of my co-workers is German, so I speak the language on a daily basis, actually.
I think German is one of the most beautiful languages around. I know that a lot of my Dutch fellowmen don't share this opinion, especially not after '40- '45 and '74..... ....

But to learn some Dutch, you might want to take a look at these sites:

    http://learngerman.elanguageschool.net/

    http://german.about.com/

There's another Dutch site where you can translate simple words into a different language.
You just fill out your requested word at the center of the page and then select english ("engels") on the dropdown menu on the left. Than you select "Duits" on the right and there you go. Your first small steps into one of the most beautiful languages around:

    www.vertalen.nu.

Viel Spaß mit der Deutschen Sprache. Toi, toi, toi!
  5. Haha, Rob seems to be half German already, mixing up Dutch and Deutsch.

  7. haha, you wish

Rob, Wattenscheid is part of the city of Bochum, which is no more than 20 minutes from my place

and Kerkrade... yeah... -- wished I'd be only half as good at speaking Dutch as you are in German
